Rental in Rome for April and the best place to stay
 

I have had a great experience renting an apartment through Paris Perfect and would like to know if I can duplicate that same experience with Rental in Rome agency. My budget is 80-100 Eu.s and I am looking in the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navonna location. I see a nice selection in that price range. Since I loved the Latin Qtr. in Paris, where we rented last, I would like to duplicate that same experience in Rome. Is there a location that any of the Fodorites would recommend other than two listed? We are not heavy on the sight seeing since this is our 3rd time back to Rome. We like the shops, the easy to get to sites, but we are seasoned travelers and don't mind walking. We do like a little hustle and bustle of the street and city scene. Please any recommendations would be great. Thanks

If you can afford Paris Perfect apartments, I believe they run a sister agency in Rome.

If you like hustle and bustle, the areas of the Spanish Steps and piazza Navona should make you very happy, and since you say you are shoppers, maybe the Spanish Steps if the apartments you are looking at are equal.

Thanks for your reply. So those 2 locations are where I should look? The Italy Perfect rentals are very limited. I have seen a better selection with the Rental in Rome agency. Is this a reliable place to look for rentals? I would like to stay in the 100Eu. range. Is there a better area for the money that I can look at? Can you provide any suggestions? A couple of spots spring to mind. The Trastevere has a similar buzz to the Latin Quarter with a grittier feel and also around the lower Esquiline area around Via Serpenti puts you close to the historic quarter and has a local yet humming social scene. You should be able to find a place in your budget in those areas. Good luck and enjoy Rome.

Based on your comment that you likes shops, I thought you might prefer the Spanish Steps over the piazza Navona, but that's really only by a nose. If you prefer antique shops and art galleries, then go with piazza Navona, and take a look at places around the via Giulia or the via di Monserrato in the Campo de Fiori/Jewish quarter area.

As for price, I think that within the prime touristic center of Rome, price tends to be equivalent neighborhood by neighborhood. Price is tied to amenities and size -- meaning, the bigger the apartment the more it costs, and if you want air con or wi-fi, or a terrace or an elevator, price ticks up per item on the wish list.

Reviews on Slow Travel are usually way out of date, and people there tend to all repeat each other's trips, so the range of reviews turns out to be small.

Thanks Zep, Franco, Henry. I will look at the reviews and concentrate on Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, and Trestevere. Is there any others that I might want to look at. I want to stay close but not out of the way. I see the prices are much lower in Trestevere but is it that much more out of the way? One other area is the Trevi Fountain area? I am sorry to ask all these questions but it has been sometime since I was in Rome. We will be spending a week in April there. I appreciate your help.

I don't think Trastevere is that much more out of the way when it comes to sightseeing, and it is downright fun if you learn to use the buses or trams that will save you some steps. Although it is popular with students, it is somewhat peripheral to the commercial heart of Rome, and has more of a village-y feel, so only can assess if you want to trade the lower price for the absence of being in the urban thick of things, and the extra steps.

Trevi Fountain is definitely central, and I wouldn't expect a price break there. No reason not to consider it if you see an apartment you like.

It was a couple of years ago, but I had a good experience renting from Real Rome. realrome.com

I stayed at the Portico Reginella in the old Jewish Ghetto neighborhood. I loved the location, it was peaceful and quiet at night, and only a couple of minutes walk away to more bustling areas. It's within walking distance to many sites, and there is a bus stop nearby. It's a very small area, there were a few small art galleries, antique shops, bric a brac, also bakeries and butchers and the like, and a few restaurants.

The apartment itself was exactly as advertised, with no unwelcomed surprises.

The location though, was one of my favourite places in Rome.

p.s. not sure if this matters, but I'm not a fan of the Latin Quarter at all. The old Jewish Quarter in Rome is NOT similar in feel, at least to me (and to me that was a good thing) but you will be literally 2 minutes walk away from the Pantheon which is maybe slightly more Latin Quartery.

Thanks again for your reply's. It looks like I am running out of time and need to decide what location. I checked out the trip advisor reviews and I am a little concerned about Rental in Italy. Real Rome and Italy Perfect has fewer choices. I might set my sights on Trestevere for value. Any idea about street and locations? Thanks again for your input.

Trastevere: Using a map, I would generally aim for the section closest to the Tiber, and not too far north or south. That is very, very general of course, but it sounds like you would enjoy a more central area of Rome, and I think using a map to choose in Trastevere would be a good idea for you.

Rental in Rome worked for us. We stayed in the Audrey apartment between the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo. My husband especially liked the evening crowds along the Corso, and I enjoyed the shops.

We've stayed in many sections of central Rome, and enjoyed them all.

I would really prefer to stay in a Hotel, rather than an apartment but am having trouble finding one under 100E a night. Any ideas? Spanish steps of Campo di Fiori? I too am running out of time... sigh... (I promise to post all the places I stay when I come back!)

I have seen some inexpensive places on VRBO for Rome. I have also stayed at the Pensione Erdarelli many years ago http://www.erdarelliromehotel.com/ and checked their rates. They are every reasonable and very close to the Spanish Steps on Due Macelli.

I have also shelved my Italy trip but I want to thank all the Fodorites that responded to my request. You are the best. I will follow up on a recommendation on Apt Clelie for my trip next April. My only concern is that they only take cash for the Apt. and I feel their is no protection like a credit card. If anyone has any recommendations about that please let me know. Thanks again for all your help.
