Rental car vs. other means of travel

My husband and I would like to rent a car going from Zurich to Munich to Prague to Berlin, but the costs are very high. We want to maximize time driving in nice parts of the countries but would go by train or other mean if necessary to save money on some parts. What do you recommend?

If you go the other way, German Rail has special (~€29 pP) fares for Berlin to Prague. They also have special fares as low as €19 pP either way from Munich to Zurich. For Prague to Munich, you can buy a €27 Bayern-Ticket for 2-5 people online in advance for the border to Munich on regional train (that's about all there is on those routes) and a Czech Rail ticket from ticket from Prague to the border for probably less than €10 pP.

Its definetely up to what you want to see and how much time you do have.
Going straight from Zurich to Munich to Prague to Berlin would be better done by train. No driving stress and if you book right in advance with special offers much cheaper.
In case you want to see more countryside and smaller places a car would be more preferable.
If you have lets say more as 2 weeks for the journey train or even bus could be considered. In Germany and surrounding countries they have special tickets for slower trains. Just around 30 Euro for up to 5 persons travelling together and valid the whole day. Check bahn.de for it.

International drop-off fee for rental car should make train travel much less costly.
If you want to mix train and car, you should calculate the costs for train from Zurich to Munich, and rental car from there. But I doubt that a car will be much fun in Prague.

One way to save a few euros for Prague-Berlin would be to book Bad Schandau-Berlin at www.bahn.de in time to get the 29€ fare. In Prague buy a cheap ticket that will cover the portion from Prague to Bad Schandau.

Thanks for the help so far. So I assume that the drive from Zurich-Munich-Romantic road is more interesting than Prague to Berlin?

How about taking the train from Zurich to Konstanz (in Germany)and renting a car there? It's not very far, and if you rent a car at least you will be picking it up and dropping it off in Germany, so no drop-off fee.

Hi T,

Picking the car up in Zurich and dropping in Germany is the 1st problem.

Driving in the CR is the second.

Check www.autoeurope.com and see if they will let you take a car into the CR.

If so, train from Zurich to Munich and get your car there.
