rental car trunk space
We are going to Marseille in September and have rented a Renault Megane. Four adults will be in the car. How many/what size suitcases do you estimate will fit in the trunk? I understand it is very small. Similar to any American car? Tks

I say it's similar in size to the new Dodge Caliber.
Dodge Caliber's length/width/height is: 173.8/63.8/60.4 inches = 4415/1620/1534mm The 5-door Megane is 4209/1777/1457mm |
It's a nice hatchback-style car that works well for four as the back passengers will have ample visibility. Though I've never hired one, fitting much more than 4 carry-on cases in the back storage compartment could be problematic.

You might think about upgrading to a Renault Scenic, sort of a cross between a sedan and a small SUV. Holds 4 very comfortably, and the covered storage area takes a fair amount of luggage.
Most car-rental sites offer information on their vehicles' luggage capacity, BTW. |
If you go to renaultusa.com you can see the models, with # and size of suitcases that will fit.
We lease a Kangoo, but I'm with Underhill for 4 people (and I think Americans notoriously have lots of more luggage than other nationalities). |
Keep in mind you arent sure you are going to get a Megane . Thats only an example of the category of vehicule. If you look on the rental website it will show you how many suitcases will fit.

There are different models of Renault Megane. In Germany we rented a Megane coupe - it was classified a "C" category compact - i.e., 2/3 doors ("D" is 4/5 door compact.) The trunk was quite small (only big enough for our 2 22 inch bags and a similar sized, but squishier, backpack.) It was a big enough car for 2 in that model, and perhaps it's big enough for 3 in the 5 - door model, but I wouldn't try to fit 4 and luggage. For 4 adults, you need at least the next size up.
