rental car Lourdes to Northern Spain

Are we likely to have a problem renting a car at Lourdes airport and using it to cross the boarder to Northern Spain?

No problem at the border but if you plan to drop the car off in Spain, check the drop-off charges which might be very steep.

There are no border controls between France and Spain. These days the border is often no more than a sign, similar to crossing from NC to SC or any other state border.

No problem at all - border controls have been gone for decades. Just make sure you're aware of the requirements from country to country - in Spain, for example, if you wear prescription lenses, you're required to have a spare set of them. Also check regs on flares and other emergency equipment. And don't leave the car in Spain unless you want to pay hundreds extra.
