Rental Car - Italy

Hi,

Quick question. We will be picking up a rental car in Sorrento and dropping off in Florence. It seems there are several locations in both cities to pick up cars and I need some advise as to which to choose.

Sorrento - Will arrive by bus from Positano
Options are:

SORRENTO CITY OFFICE
SORRENTO DOWNTOWN OFFICE

Florence - Once we drop off the car we will be leaving via train to CT.
Options are:

FLORENCE DOWNTOWN OFFICE
FLORENCE PERETOLA AIRPORT
FLORENCE CITY OFFICE GELSOMINO
FLORENCE CITY OFFICE

To simplify my question I am looking for the most convenient pick up and drop off location. Close to bus stop for Sorrento and close to train station for Florence.

Thank you very much!
Ann

Ann, You do not want to drive into Florence---drop at the airport. The taxi ride into town is only about :15 and 20E. Sorrento depends on where you start--pull up a map of Sorrento on maps.google.com Oops...now I see your are leaving for the CT. Forget Florence---drop at La Spezia or even Pisa---both much closer.

Really La Spezia or Pisa? We would be dropping the car off and then getting on the train for CT. Can that be done easily from one of these cities?

What company are you using? Sorrento is not that big and Sorrento city would be the same as Sorrento downtown. Do you have addresses?

apirone Aug 30th, 2007 01:23 PM

Hi

Auto Europe via Kayak. It doesn't give and address it just gives two options:

SORRENTO CITY OFFICE
SORRENTO DOWNTOWN OFFICE

I was hoping we could just take a bus from Positano and be dropped off somewhere close to one of these office and then grab the car and go.

Thank you so much,
Ann

Without an address I can't help you, maybe somewhere on Autoeurope website there is an address?

apirone Aug 30th, 2007 01:34 PM

Oh it is on the site ... sorry about that
SORRENTO CITY OFFICE:
Sorrento City Office Corso Italia, 210 / A

SORRENTO DOWNTOWN OFFICE:
Sorrento Downtown Office 53 Viale Nizza

Thank you so much!

I was going to ask a similar question. I am picking a car up in Florence also. The adress is Via Borgognissanti 128 R, Florence, 5012.
I am arriving by train and I am staying at the Shereton. How close is that address to the central train?

rkkwan Aug 30th, 2007 01:46 PM

Since AutoEurope is a broker and not a actual rental company, those two locations in central Sorrento belong to two different rental companies.

My bet is that the rate will be different between the two. I'll take the cheaper one...

RJD Aug 30th, 2007 01:53 PM

The Florence location you asked about is a short 5 minute walk from the train station. All the downtown rental firms are in the same area. I have rented cars there and dropped them off many times. It's not hard to drive there with a decent map and it saves gobs of time over the airport.

apirone Aug 30th, 2007 01:54 PM

The price is only slightly different. I really just want the most convenient. Taking a bus from Positano there. Or do we pay for a taxi. I can only imagine that will be very expensive.

Thanks
Ann

The office on Corso is right after P. Tasso so you can get off there and then walk down. The other one is further down and not too far off of Corso. All else being equal I would chose the one on Corso if I had luggage to schlep. have fun

The drop point may determine the vendor, hence the location. The model may also. Input Sorrento and La Spezia ans see what you get. Forget Kayak.

RJD,
Was the Via Borgognissanti 128 R location the one you were talking about that is 5 minutes from the train station?

SuQue Aug 30th, 2007 04:37 PM

It was a short walk from the train station to the car rental pick up on Borgo Ognossanti and then, it was not difficult to drive out of Florence from that location.. We have also dropped cars off there.

Great, thank you for the help.

One problem with looking at the pick up and drop off locations on AutoEurope is that the addresses are for various agencies. Once you select one pick up choice, that may determine which drop off choice is the only one possible. This is another reason why it makes a lot more sense to pick up the phone and call AutoEurope so you can talk to a representative who may actually know the different locations and give you good advice. 1-800-223-5555
Incidentally I've always gotten a better price from them by phone than I have on the website.

Is the parking in Siena a real problem?
I thought I read that somewhere.
Thanks
