I have a very similar question; we will have a car while in Tuscany (Montalcino), and will drop it off enroute to Positano. From what I've read, Sorrento is a good drop off point. Questions
1. Plan to drive to Sorrento / bus to Positano on a Saturday. Will this be OK (on a weekend)?
2. How 'hard' is the drive from Naples to Sorrento?
3. Also want to see Pompeii. Better to stop enroute, OR stay 1st night in Sorrento OR stay last night in Sorrento (going to Rome after Positano).

driving is not difficult and I would highly suggest it for time, convenience and luxury. I just posted a trip report to the same places you are considering. you can see it as "italy trip report part 1"

I was pretty detailed about my driving experience. dont worry about getting lost as you will for sure. its part of the fun and some of the gems are found that way.

stick to the highways and you'll do fine. if you need specific information on exact directions dont hesitate to email me. As you will see I have driven quite extensively in Italy.

by the way, for CT, drive to monterosso and park the car. you will do the rest on foot or by boat.

I'll never forget the time I took a bus tour of the winding Amalfi Coast roads, looked up, and saw the bus driver was smoking a cigarette, talking on the phone, AND shifting the bus as he drove! After that, I swore I would always do my own driving!

I love driving in Italy (I'm New York City born and bred), but don't do it if you're not capable of being an agressive driver. The advice I was given in Naples has stayed with me forever - forget your rear view mirror, forget everything that's not forward of your driver compartment, just concentrate on everything next to you and in front of you - and never slow down!

By the way, Naples to Sorrento is only an hour, and Pompeii is about halfway between the two.
