I was trying to rent a car in Marseilles but I was told that the car rental shops are closed on Sunday which is the day that our cruise ship arrives - we were able to get the car from Hertz but at the Railway Station - anyone know how far away that is ?

I remember arriving by train in Marseilles and doing a very long walk to the waterfront. I'm sure there will be taxis where the cruise ship comes in.

Not a walking distance, it should be about 10-15 minutes by taxi from the cruise ship port of Marseille to St.Charles Railway station. Also there are direct subway and bus lines. The stop near the port is called "Joliette" .

I guess how safe it is to drive depends mostly on how good a driver you are. LOL

Traffic at the train station is nuts to say the least. Try to come and go early or late, not during the day.
