- PREM TGV tickets to Dijon are 15E X 2 = 30E. The trip takes 1 hr 40 mins

Depending upon exactly when the topeater purchases PREMs, they may cost as much as 27€ or more each.

- According to Viamichelin the gas/tolls are 53E and the trip takes 3 1/2 hours.

It could take 3+15 to reach Dijon but topeater is not asking about Dijon, the destination is Levernois which is little more than 3 hours by car from Paris. Most trains from Paris to Dijon do take well under 2 hours but it will require 45 minutes to drive from Dijon to Levernois. Under ideal consitions, the train to Dijon and then a drive to Levernois might save 30 minutes. Depending upon lines at the car rental desk, it might take longer.

Dijon has a downtown office where topeater can pick up a car and thus avoid the 40E train station fee.

This is correct and it would be a way to save on the train station pickup surcharge. But the in town Dijon office is more than one mile from the train station. Are you proposing topeater walk over one mile with luggage to save 40€?

because the taxi driver did all the driving in your case.

Your intentions in making this uncharacteristically contemptuous comment are unclear. Perhaps you could clarify?

Overall, renting a car in Paris and driving to Levernois is a viable alternative. One which will very likely cost less than the train and might be even faster overall. It should not be quickly discounted.

>>For driving time, check these sources and add about 30% more time for stops and traffic:

www.viamichelin.fr<<

Viamichelin says it is 3 hr 13 min driving time to Levernois. Add 30% and it is close to 4 hrs.

My comment about Mary "driving out of Paris" was that since the taxi driver drove the "hard part" - she probably didn't experience the anxiety of a "first-timer" driving out of Paris. Probably no wrong turns either.

We did exactly what she did this past Sept in Seville - found a rental office close to the road out of town, and took a taxi to the office.

I think that time and perhaps cost are of more importance to the OP than any concern about driving as such. I suggested train based on time and money. My assumption is since the OP is asking about driving as an alternative to the train, the OP is willing and able to drive. Comments about confidence are therefore not necessary.

I don't think anyone has made a case for driving being faster or cheaper.

If Mary or anyone else felt that my comments about her "exit" from Paris were contemptuous, then my apologies to Mary. That certainly was not my intention.
