Rent a car or take the the train to Brussels?

We will be in Paris during the month of August and want to get to Brussels and a nearby town for flea mkts. In case we find lots of good "stuff", we're thinking about taking a car from Paris...OR....if that's terribly expensive we could do rt on the train and ship anything we buy from Brussels. If we rent a car, would it be best to do it here before we go, even tho' it would only be for 3 or 4 days? Is Auto Europe the best in this situation? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks a lot. Mary

Hi mc,

You can get SMILYS fares Paris/Brussels on the THALYS for as low as 24.5E pp each way. 1:25 hr trip.

Much cheaper than a car.

Are you kidding? Driving a car anywhere near, in, or out of Paris? You either must be a glutton for punishment, have the courage of a toreador, or have money to burn! Take the train!

Actually, we found driving in Paris easier than driving in Brussels--even though we lived there and know the city pretty well. It's a warren of one-way streets, streets that go under and over each other, streets that are blocked by various demonstrations aimed at the EU, NATO, or whomever, bottlenecks because there is only one main street to get from the EU part of town down to central Brussels, etc.
Take the train. Having a car won't help you with the flea markets in Brussels...the streets around the markets are closed to cars, parking will be very difficult, and it's simply not cost effective.
FYI, last August, we found more "good stuff" at the flea markets in Bruges than in Brussels.
Finally, don't limit yourself to flea markets in Brussels. Pick up a copy of The Bulletin and flip to the classifieds in the back. You'll find lots of moving and other types of sales listed.

BTilke..Thanks so much for your input. We had discussed going to Bruge also but didn't know if it was worth the trip for a flea mkt. Now we might reconsider. Mary

Hi mc,

>We had discussed going to Bruge also but didn't know if it was worth the trip for a flea mkt. <

There is much, much more to Bruges than a flea market.
