Renfe website -- what am I doing wrong?
 

I've tried repeatedly to use the renfe.com website to check train schedules, and every route I check comes up with a "no direct route" message and doesn't give an alternative. Currently, I'm trying to check times for Granada-Seville and the same thing happens. Is there some "trick" to using this site? Or maybe a different site out there? Also, is it necessary to order tix in advance for these shorter routes, or would we be better off just purchasing as we go?

I've just looked at www.renfe.es (without specifying a date) and it shows four trains daily from Granada to Sevilla with a fare of 20.05 euros. I think the current timetable only goes up to 9 December. Seats need to be reserved for these trains, but it's almost certainly easier to buy tickets in Spain.

www.bahn.de will give you the schedules for nearly every European train.

You can also buy tickets to/in/from Germany, should you wish to.

Anyway when I tried the timetable function, it gave many trains for the route you are looking for including the price, EURO 20.05 but that's for November. From sometime in December, I get the same message "no diretc route" Maybe their time table changes somewhere in between and the site is not resady for the new one yet.

Most European railways introduce new timetables on 10 December. If the new schedules are not on-line yet, then use current schedules as a guide, but check precise times as they become available.
For Spanish schedules, always use RENFE's web site. The Deutsche Bahn web site includes long-distance services in Spain, but does not include all Spanish local trains (listed separately by RENFE as "cercanias").

What's your travel date? We are going from Granada to Seville on Dec.26 & had your same problem trying to find the direct route on the renfe website. I e-mailed renfe directly with my concern & received the following message: " due to a change of services scheduled for the month of december, the only trains available for online booking are those departing up to 12/15. When the situation normalizes, the system will allow the usual 62 days for advance booking. Check www.renfe.es for the current timetable as they become available". Up to know, still there is no current information of schedules on the renfe website on my date. But definitely there is a direct train from Granada to Seville as the manager of my Granada hotel confirmed it. I wanted to have the tickets beforehand but I don't think there will be any problem buying the tickets on Granada. Also there are buses that does this route, www.alsinagraells.es. I was told they are very comfortable. The cost is 17,60E & they have 2 direct departures times. One departs Granada at 8:00AM arrives Seville 10:45AM, the other 10:00Am - 12:45. Just wondering which route will be the most panoramic. Any idea?. I hope this helped, & that we have a great time in Granada & Seville. We are going to be for New Years in Madrid.

I cannot speak for the bus route but I have done the train between Granada and Seville.

The trip takes about three hours.

Much of the scenery reminded me of the southwestern USA but with the addition of olive groves. The architecture (what some in the US would call "Spanish Colonial") is similar as well.

The train had piped in music when we took it. Apparently somebody at Renfe likes old Frank Sinatra tunes (think "Old Black Magic" and so forth).

I have heard the bus takes less time but at least on the train you can get up and move about a bit.

the bus takes ages. cant rememeber how long exactly but it seemed like forever. goes through all the towns along the way.

elizrg... were you able to check the train schedules from Granada- Seville at the renfe website? The new timetable is already available (there are four daily departures at 20.05E) I checked it for my December trip. I was told that it is not necessary to buy tickets in advance. If you are traveling the 27 or 28 of December there is a 40% discount for the tickets if bought at local travel agencies or at the train stations. I don't know if the discount is available if bought via internet. I hope this helped.

You can check on any available route combination on the Renfe.es web page by clicking the one of the language flags on the left side of the main page and select the search function for the "I want to travel from:". This will take you to a page that lists every station in Spain. You select the departure city/station and you will see all of the available destinations from that station.
