The law is that under 12s who are under 4'5" have to use a booster seat. If your 9 year old is taller than that, then he doesn't need to use one.

Your main concern shouldn't be whether or not the hire company will let you get away with it. If you break the law you could get in trouble with the police.

I obviously don't want to get in trouble with the police.. however, in the US - the rules re booster seats are not strictly enforced and very grey area -- even among all my friends with small kids..noone is quite sure if their kids need boosters - infant/toddler seats are a different thing....just trying to understand whether all French children under 12 actually use boosters if they are not 4'5"??

After reading through this post I conacted Autoeurope to find out about booster seats for our holiday in Italy in July. Our supplier Auto Europa only supplies seats for children up to 3 and even after trying to change suppliers she could find none who supplied car seats for children older than seven. My daughter will be older than seven in July. Any suggestions?

Not sure I understand, Bug. You just request whatever you need. I am requesting a booster seat and a child seat as I always have. It is either in the car when I go to pick it up or I have to go the office to pick up what I need. Of course we are charged for whatever we use. In France, Avis charges 28 EUR per rental per seat. We've never been asked how old the children are.

Try getting a quote on Avis.com using AWD D005927. When you are making the reservation there is a section that gives you the option to choose the number of infant, child or booster seats you may need.

Bug- it sounds like a communications problem. The AutoEurope people appear to be looking at the full car seat for young children rather than booster seats for bigger kids who are under 12 and/or under 4'5".

I don't know how strictly this is enforced as in the UK this is quite a new law.

We were in Berlin last week and took taxis four or five times. Each time the driver pulled a booster out for my 7 year old, and twice it happened for my 9 year old. The kids looked at me confused, but obeyed the drivers instruction that they needed to use it. Now I understand why.....

I am renting a car this summer with autoeurope and will have to figure out whether to bring mine from home (which they haven't used in Canada since they respectively turned 6), or buy some in France when I arrive.

We had 6(4 adults, 2 children)in the Espace for 2 weeks in Italy. We managed to squeeze in by taking out one of the removable back seats, and using bungy to strap it to the roof rack. We looked ridiculous, but it worked out well. I don't think you can do it with 7 passengers unless you bungy a couple of bags on top. The rack was adjustable, so it might work for you. If not, get the Mercedes suv/van. We thought that would be the car next time. Good luck!
