Willtravel, the problem is that the average/mean price point for a city, say Paris, will invariably be higher than the average/mean price point for smaller towns and villages. E70 is close to what I recently paid in (example) Bayeux or Arras (with breakfast); E130 is closer to what I paid in Paris (assuming a refundable price - and that's another problem. Conditions of booking can vary. In general, the more generous the cancellation policy, the higher the price for one and the same category of establishment.)

(By the way, sorry to be picky, but this is a thread on statistics: 'mean' and 'average' refer to the same statistical measure; mean and 'median' are NOT the same measure.)

I agtree in principle with Padraig, although I am not sure the categories in the original survey are the best ones to use for that purpose.

Many times I have read a post that recommended a "moderate, very reasonable" restaurant only to look it up (on-line or in Zagat) to discover that a typical meal would be 60-100 euros--not my definition of "moderate."

The most useful posts that recommend restaurants also give some information about location (arrondissement), cuisine, and cost. Knowing something about the poster's lux-level might be helpful as a proxy for "cost."
