Relais Hotel Vieux Paris

I'll be staying at the Relais Hotel Vieux Paris (Latin Qtr.) in a couple of weeks. Here's their web site:

Anyone stayed there? What can I expect?

Thx!

Not too many people here has stayed there. It's pretty expensive but the location is excellent. Otherwise, what should you expect? Can you be more specific?

Otherwise, check out the comments at Trip Advisor if you haven't done so already.

Well, sometimes hotels aren't all they claim .... it's nice to get feedback from people who have stayed there. It is a bit pricey, but work is paying... :-)

Hmmm, and I wonder do you think nothing can be made up here? I agree that false negative comments can be made at Trip Advisor, but the majority of comments are genuine. Sorry to say this now as you'll be there soon and while it is a nice hotel I find it way overpriced for the rooms they offer.

Breadman/Anyone, did you enjoy your stay at Hotel de Vieux Paris? I am looking at it too, versus the Villa d'Estrees on the same street (#17). I read the reviews; internet is offering a discount. thx

I stayed there in 1988 when it was in Frommer's book as a decent budget hotel. The room was weirdly decorated but the location could not be beat. We peeked in when we were in Paris in '03. What a change!

Hi Katerbug -

If you are considering either Villa D'Estrees or Hotel Vieux, I'd go with Villa D'Estrees. We stayed there for a week in March and while walking by Hotel Vieux Paris, took a peek at the Hotel Vieux Paris as "research" for next time and it reeked of smoke(this was in the evening, around 10:00 - even just being in the lobby didn't look nice at all for a 4star. I was actually quite surprised when I went outside to check again that it was indeed 4-star. I wouldn't be critical if it was charging 2 star ratings but I also remember that I just got a creepy vibe from the honeymoon/heart-shaped tub kind of marketing - not that there's anything wrong with that but it almost felt too motel-like, not 4-star - again, nothing wrong with a motel but the price should reflect that. I can send you actual pictures of Villa D'Estrees that I took - it was very nice but if you don't like dark/Napoleonic look, this might bother you too. The lobby, as a lot of the trip advisor commented was rather dark, and the rooms had that look as well but we found it quite comfortable, clean and elegant, and the staff cannot be more accomodating and gave us the most excellent recommendations to everything - best value for restaurants, etc. Location can't be beat too and the rooms are quite large for Paris standards. I was told by the night auditor as they call them(night person I guess), they give the larger rooms to those that book directly with the hotel than those that book through expedia, etc. The one we got which I booked direct was almost 300 sf. Hope that helps. I hope I am wrong about the actual rooms of Hotel Vieux Paris - I would be interested to hear from Breadman. Villa D'Estrees also has a property right across the street called Residence Des Artes which I wish I had known about before booking because the price was less and you get all the service from the hotel as well.

If you want the pictures of the inside of the room, let me know and I can send it to you offline.

Thanks!

P.S. I am NOT anyone working for Villa D'Estrees : )

P.P.S. I was intending to add our comments in trip advisor right after our trip because it was just such a wonderful stay but of course, got caught up in real living! The breakfast is well worth it too - like what all the others suggested but I still doubted it so we would go get our own every morning as there are tons of places to get food from every morning. We finally tried it one day and kept regretting all the previous days : )

bonzhoor, i'd like to see your pics. my email address is [email protected]. I've added yet another possiblity (instead of Hotel Vieux Paris because they have not responded to any of my questions-and now the SMOKE issue) and that is Hotel d'Aubusson. They have been very prompt and thorough with all correspondence, and my various anal American questions! I have not cancelled Villa d'Estrees, and I do have the issue of being "dark" on my mind so your pics would be great! Your positive comments regarding the helpfulness of the staff definitely put it high on my list of considerations! thx:)

I stayed there for three days about 7 years ago and I LOVED it!! I actually stayed in the first room shown on their “room tour” on the website. I would gladly stay there again, and have looked it up on subsequent trips to Paris, but the prices were either too high or the place was full (which is always a GOOD sign).

If it is as good as it was 7 years ago (and that IS a long time ago and hotels can change drastically in that time) then I have no problem recommending it. My room was just as lovely as it appears on the website. The service was superb: so personal, friendly and attentive it was as if I were staying at a country inn. Location is great for those that want to stay in that area; I subsequently branched out to the 1st (found a great hotel (the Jolly Lotti , right beside the Intercontinental; can’t afford it since it has been “beautrified”) and 14th (great value and I love the area).

I have stayed in a few hotels in this area and this is the only one I would recommend. Frankly, I can’t even remember the names of the others I was so unimpressed.

If you DO stay there, please report back.

Regards Ger
