Regional Bus Bavaria

Has anyone taken the bus from Garmish to Fussen? I plan to stay in Garmisch and do my sightseeing for that area from there. However I woulkd like to do the Romantic Road by bus and thought I would go to Fussen the day before. Does this sound practical? I have looked on the DB sight with no luck. Also any suggestions for a hotel near the bus station in fussen?? Thanks.

I have not taken the bus on this route, but there are buses. The 9606 line runs there directly. With some you have to connect at Echelsbacher Brucke stop (on the schedule that follows, see "Bus nach Fussen ab" for departure time from there to Fussen.

I do not recommend the Romantic road bus (very limited travel times, little time to see towns along the way) and would respectfully suggest taking the train instead (RB and RE trains in Bavaria will cost only 15 Euros for a one-person daypass, 22 for a daypass for up to 5 people - ask for the Bayern Ticket.) The train doesn't hit every town on the road but does connect to most.

Russ -
Thanks for the bus schedule information. We also are planning on a trip to the Southern Bavaria region and will not be driving, but depending on public transportation.

We have looked into the Bayern ticket, and were hoping you could confirm that the ticket covers buses as well as trains?

We want to stay in the Fussen area and do a day trip to the Garmish area (or maybe the other way around) and when we do a query on www.bahn.de for train travel, it takes us through Munich. Is there a shorter way to get from point A to point B, without having to go all the way into Munich?

Robyn: According to the following DB webpage, the RVO bus system is indeed covered by the Bayern Ticket. The other local bus systems that are covered are listed as well.

http://www.bahn.de/pv/view/int_guest..._tickets.shtml

However, if you plan to travel within this region only, ask about the other passes available. I looked at the RVO website and found that a 1-day bus pass costs 8 Euros each; you get 6 days for 24 Euros each.

You probably have to go back ALMOST to Munich because of the way the lines run if going only by train. However, there is a train line that runs through Austria just south of Fussen and heads directly to Garmisch. From Fussen, you catch a bus to Vils or Reutte and continue by train from there along a wonderfully scenic route called the Ausserfernbahn that runs behind the Zugspitze. I took this train 2 years ago and it was great. The other neat thing about it is that the Bayern Ticket will cover you there too!

Let me check on that bus from Fussen and I'll repost.

Yeah, Here's that schedule for Fussen to Vils or Reutte; it's only 13 minutes to Vils bf. (train station) so it won't cost much if the Bayern ticket doesn't cover it.

use www.bahn.de for train schedules from Vils or Reutte to Garmisch.

Thank-you Russ for your sound advice. Taking the train from Garmisch to Rothenburg is an option I will consider as I was only going to
Fussen to catch the bus to go to Rothenburg and then to Frankfurt the following day. I just thought it would be nice calling into the different towns along the way. Anyway food for thought. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for the valuable information. I had already been to the Laender Ticket page of the DB website, and read the descrition of what was covered under the Bayern Ticket, but, not knowing the transportation system it was confusing to decipher. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Peace.

Hi Russ,

I've reading your post about the Romantic Road bus; I have reservations with Deutsche Touring, from Munich to Frankfurt, it costs 19.60E. I don't like about this bus a lot because they don't make longer stops at the villas.

I don't know if could take train to make the route (I already have an europass) or if there are other buses that cover this route.

Could you help with this?

I've searched a lot on this forum, but I can't find the answer to my question.

Thank you so much,

AMCHO

AMCHO: You would be wise in my opinion not to take the bus. The scenery along the Road isn't really any more special than the scenery from the train routes through the area, and the real purpose of visiting the area, in my opinion, is not to just pass through as you look out the window, but to stop and tour some of the towns.

The train lines do not follow the route exactly, and a few of the RR towns cannot be reached by train, but most can. Weikersheim, Wurzburg, Rothenburg, Nordlingen, Augsburg, Landsberg, and Fussen all have stations. You will have to take a look at the following train line map to see how the lines run and to make trip decisions if you will be using the train:

www.bayern-takt.de/htdocs/bahnkarte.htm

I should mention that the train can also take you to other very interesting nearby towns that don't happen to lie on the Road itself and that the bus does not stop in. Eichstaett and Weissenburg are two towns east of Nordlingen that make for good stops, for example.

I don't know if your pass is a consecutive-day pass or if the travel days are limited; if it's a 10-days-in-30 pass or that type, you might not want to use up one of the travel days on your pass in Bavaria. You can ride the regional trains (RE, RB) on any day of the week throughout Bavaria for 15 Euros single, 22 Euros per group of 5 if you buy a Bayern ticket (daypass).

AMCHO Mar 31st, 2004 05:26 AM

Russ: I agree with you, it's not the same think look out the window, we really like to stop and tour the towns, we have a consecutive-day pass, so we'll take the train instead of taking the bus.
We checked the train line map you suggested and it's great, we now have the route to take.

Thank you so much for your help...!!!!

Russ -

What a great rail map you recommended for Bavaria. Is there something similar for Baden-Wurtemburg and the Rhineland? Thanks.

Robyn

Russ Mar 31st, 2004 04:30 PM

Robyn: I have this one for B-W:

www.rail-and-relax.de/index1.html

I will look for the Rheinland-Pfalz map.

Russ Mar 31st, 2004 04:47 PM

Robyn: Here's a pdf map of Rheinland-Pfalz' train lines:

http://www.bahn.de/pv/view/mdb/conte...aarland/25.pdf

Russ Mar 31st, 2004 04:52 PM

Robyn: a clarification. The green lines on the Rheinland-Pfalz map are regional bus lines. Also, the map includes the state of Saarland.

Hey Russ,

I am always amazed at Fodor's readers like yourself that seem to know so much.

Can you tell us if you live in Germany or are you just a very frequent traveller overseas.

Just wondering. You and a few other regulars seem to know alot.

I'm booked in a town called Sommerach along the Main River in Bayern for 2 months this summer and I'll be needing bus info as well. The nearest main train station will be in Kitzingen. Nothing but an occasional bus going through my town of Sommerach.

Thanks for the info and I'd be grateful if anyone out there has any insight on the towns of Sommerach, Volkach, Iphofen (Although I've seen plenty written about Iphofen), or Kitzingen

Russ Apr 1st, 2004 11:01 AM

Thanks for the compliment, peg. I lived in Germany as a student many years ago and have returned many times to Germany and other countries since then. I've researched my trips often in the German language and have learned some things that are not easily accessible in English.

I haven't been to Sommerach but have heard some nice things about the place. You can probably find out about buses at the following site (in English), a schedule finder for pulblic transport within Bavaria (Try "Wuerzburg" if your keyboard can't do umlauts for trips into Würzburg.)

http://www.bayern-fahrplan.de/bin/ba...tApplication=3

I've heard there isn't much interesting in Kitzingen, a US base town. But south of there are Weissenburg, Pappenheim, and Eichstaett, a pleasing trio of towns clustered near the Altmuehl River.

Russ -

Thank you, once again, for taking the time to research the information for me. I'm relatively new to the Fodor's Forum, and am deeply appreciative of everyone who has shared their experiences and knowledge. I can't believe we made 4 trips to Europe before we discovered this forum! It's individuals like you who will help to make our trip more enjoyable. Please know that when we finally do take our trip to Germany, a part of you (and all who helped) will be travelling with us. Peace. - Robyn
