Regensburg or Cesky Krumlov for Two Nights
 

I've been looking into heading to Regensburg or Cesky Krumlov for 2 nights on our way to Prague from Salzburg. We want to break up that leg of the journey into more manageable (less travel time) parts.

I was wondering if anyone on these forums have been to these locations, and could give me a brief summary of the highlights of each.

To give you an insight of our interests...my wife and I are history and architecture lovers, and love to just wander aimlessly taking in the scenery for photography.

If you were to choose one destination which would you choose and why?

I have been to Regensburg for business in January 2011. Nice old centre and a beautiful gothic cathedral. But I ended in the Sorat Insel hotel, a former mill on a small island in the middle of the Danube, and they gave me a room overseeing the old city. The photo of the old homes along the river with the cathedral on back on an icy morning is maybe the most scenic photo I ever shoot.

Either is fine and you won't be disappointed. Regensburg is much larger than Cesky Krumlov, though, and would have more to do and see for you.

Go to Cesky Krumlov if you want small town ambience and a great castle, or to Regensburg for a large old medieval city with lots of churches, townhouses and town hall to see.

I haven't been to Regensberg, only CK which sounds a lot smaller (it couldn't have a cathedral or be the seat of a bishopric, for example).

The main site is the castle or chateau, and St Vitus church, as well as the center town square, of course (small). They also have a small regional museum. The town is very small, there are only about 15,000 residents, I imagine. There are lots of shops to sell things to tourists, of course, as that is major business there. It is picturesque, and certainly has some history. YOu could wonder around taking pictures in the town for a couple days, I'm sure, but there aren't tons of major sites, of course.

I was going to give you a full outline of what to see in Regensburg ( I have been to both places , other have outlined Cesky Krumlov adequately),

but I thought maybe you would want to wait a while for Regensburg information since you are not going until next September. !
