Recommended Restaurants in Venice, Rome, Florence
 

In September I am taking a tour to Venice, Florence, and Roma (in that order) and would like to dine in some reasonably priced restaurants, 3 to 4 star. ... would appreciate a few recommendations per city. If you just give me one per, that would be mighty appreciated. I'm reading suggestions on the net as well as guide books, esp. ITALY by Rick Steves, but I'd also like to hear from folks who have traveled there.

In Rome we were taken to the Cul de Sac restaurant just off Plaza Navona by an American ex-pat. It is his neighborhood go to restaurant. I have no idea how many stars if any it may have, but the food was great and the wine bar laid back atmosphere gave it a nice ambiance. This place is very popular with locals so there may well be a wait.

La Zucca in Venice is good and reasonably priced but you have to book as they have an early and a later sitting [2 hours allowed so be prompt] and throw you out if you linger at the end of the first sitting. Great especially if you like vegetables but still good if you don't.

In Venice my current favorite is Ai Promessi Sposi - excellent quality and not over the top expensive.

You must book for dinner. They also do two seatings. A lot of places in Venice are doing two seatings now..

Our go to restaurant in Venice is Corte Sconta if you like fish. We discovered it when it first opened back in the '80s. Went back 6 times thereafter. It still gets excellent reviews.
However, it's a place where it's best to sit back and let the server guide you... and sideline any thought that you are being "ripped off." In good weather it's lovely to sit in the courtyard and spend the afternoon or evening eating and drinking prosecco. Also part of the fun is finding the
restaurant (it's in Castello.) Not cheap, but not the most expensive restaurant I've been to.

In Venice, Antiche Carampana is a bit hard to find but worth it also alle Testiere for the freshest seafood from the lagoon and the Adriatic is worth looking for. Trattoria alla Madonna serves the best tiramisu in Venice if not Italy. For the best deal in Venice the terrace of Pensione Wildner on Riva degli Schiavoni has a terrific 3 course lunch for €25 pp.

In Rome, Osteria Margutta on via Margutta, the prettiest street in Rome, serves a great carbonara. Nearby is Da Edy for delicious lasagna and tiramisu and for something really special the Mater Terra, the rooftop restaurant of the Raphael, has magnificent views of Rome and excellent vegetarian food. Al 34 on via Mario Di Fiori off via della Croce is outstanding and really not to be missed, sensational lamb shoulder, delicious Salmon salad in fact everything is superb.
For an Aperol Spritz the garden of Hotel de Russie on via del Babuino and Ill Palazetto at the top of the Spanish Steps can’t be beaten, the latter with great views.

In Florence, Ristorante La Posta is wonderful . Ill Latini is the best for Bistecca Florentina, no question.
