Recommendations on Salzburg restaurants

I will be in Salzburg at Christmas with my husband and teenage daughter who don't eat meat or poultry (also no deep fried and light on cheese and creamy sauces). So we need suggestions for places that would have at least one fish dish on the menu. What are some of the best restaurants in Salzburg? Are there places that have non-smoking sections? Will we encounter less smoke if we eat early? What is considered early?

Hi,
While in Salzburg last month we had dinner at Zum Mohren which was very good. I know my wife had pike or salmon which she thought was excellent. I believe they have a non smoking section.

Also it's in Frommers Austria book.

hi jps. Don't know if you'll find many restaurants in Europe that have non-smoking sections, in my opinion, it seems to be unheard of, however, that is changing in some countries. As to eating early, I think that will make a difference, however, most restaurants close during the day and don't open til later in the evening. Have a wonderful trip, Salzburg has several Christmaskindl markets to enjoy also. When will you arrive? Just curious, as in early December (the 6th or so) there is the Krampus run in many neighboring areas of Austria & Germany which is fun.

When we were in Salzburg in May, we stayed at the Best Western zum Hirschen near the train station. (Apparently it's no longer a BW.) The hotel restaurant was surprisingly good and with a strong focus on organic food and had many vegetarian options. It had a good sized nonsmoking section and even the smoking section wasn't that bad. Not expensive, but reservations advised because many hotel guests eat there.
FYI, we really liked the Hirter Bio-Pils (organic beer) served on tap at the restaurant.
I don't know if I'd call it one of the "best" restaurants in Salzburg, but it was good.
If you want to treat yourself to something special, then go to the Ikarus restaurant at Hangar 7 by the airport. An amazing place and their culinary concept is to bring in top chefs from around the world for a month. The December guest chef is Alex Atala from Sao Paolo, Brazil.
A visit to Hangar 7 with a meal at Ikarus should be one of the most memorable evenings of your trip. Reservations ESSENTIAL. (Hangar 7 is about a 12-15€ taxi ride from downtown Salzburg.)

Aaaah, here's my posting. I couldn't find it earlier and I asked the same question in another posting.

Suspaul, we won't be arriving in Salzburg until Dec. 20th.

Thanks for your responses.

I recently had a delightful evening at the Stadtkrug Restaurant which is located in the Stadtkrug Hotel. It is a small Hotel well located across the river from old Salzburg. If you would like more information here is their website:

Unfortunately, I cannot remember if there was fish on the menu. Maybe too much Austrian wine! Perhaps if you emailed them they will be able to tell you.

Trout is farmed locally and is available on many menus. It is "forellen", I believe, in German.

Located in the heart of Salzburg, Stiftskeller St. Peter (Peterskeller)is purported to be the oldest restaurant in Europe, opening in 803. Personally, I'd have to eat there just for the historical significance.
