Recommendations for Rooftop Restaurant in Rome
 

Is there a great Rooftop Restaurant in Rome that isn't Michelin starred, or requiring really dressy clothes?

I stayed at the Hotel Fortyseven in Rome that had a very nice rooftop restaurant. It was not super dressy either.

Just as a heads up, rooftop restuarants in Rome are going to give you less of a "wow" than would eating at ground level outdoors or at the piazza. There's where the life, charm and beauty of Rome is: In the public areas. For most people it makes more sense to have an aperitivo or cocktail at a rooftop bar before moving on to a better place to eat with a better price quality ratio and a terrific ambience. I think of rooftop resetaurants as restaurants where only tourists go and the food suffers for it. When in Rome....

If you are looking for a unique and uplifting venue, how about having lunch or brunch at Open Colonna?

Sandra, my husband and I have been in Rome twice, and this time we will have 5 nights there with my brother and his family (who have never been to Rome) As one of my nieces will have just turned 21, we are looking for a special night, more in atmosphere than food. I would really like a rooftop restaurant with a view where the food isn't too fancy. We'll have 4 other nights to people watch during and after dinner. Open Colonna at Palazzo delle Esposizioni looks cool, but it could be anywhere, I don't think it would give them a "Rome Memory"

kona514 Fortyseven looks lovely, probably a little more elaborate menu than we would like.

I was guessing at the number of restaurants on that list from memory (obviously bad). Seems there are closer to 100. Many won't have the views you want or location, but I'm sure you can find several that appeal.

Maybe pictures are misleading, but I don't think Open Colonna could be anywhere but Rome. However, I was suggesting it during the day, not a night

I can underestand being more interested in setting than food for one, but if you've been to Rome many times, then I am surprised you find the Rome skyline interesting at night. Were it me trying to give people a "Rome memory" even if they forget the food, I think I would pick Da Giggetto in the Portico d'Ottavia if my group was okay with fried foods & Roman Jewish cuisine. It's just incedibly atmospheric at night, and totally casual

or maybe Pier Luigi if your group likes fish. It's more upscale, with prices to match, but it is not dressy.

I think the restaurant at the Hotel Forum might provide the desired view.

Sandralist is correct, of course -- although in my opinion, seen one passeggiata, seen 'em all.

I've been to the Hotel Forum and the food is awful and quite overpriced, and think there are better views of the Forum (from the Capitoline museum -- which also has a lovely view of the city and St Peter's from its cafe terrace, but that is only open for lunch). I think the nicest part of the Hotel Forum is its old world lobby!

Don't know what the comment about passeggiate means with regards to having dinner is antique piazza (presumably you'll be eating at dinner time!)

Just means there are times when it's more fun to take a rest from absorbing the culture.

Well, a rooftop restaurant will get you away from Rome if you need a break.

I don't think we really want a "break" from Rome. I think it's always fun to look at a city from a different prospective, and see some of the places you have been to. And I think most cities are more beautiful in the evening and at night.

For me, Rome is at its peak of beauty at sunset, but I am not seriously going to talk you out of your rooftop restaurant if that is what you want for your group. I seem to recall you are going in high summer, and I imagine most of the rooftop restaurants are not going to insist on fancy dress, so long as you are more dressed than bermudas, tees and flip flops.
