Recommendations for places to stay in Germany

We are trying to select places to stay (whether hotels, inns, B&B's) on our trip to Germany in September, 2010. If you have stayed in a place that you really liked in Rothenburg, Regensburg, or Berchesgaden, we would love your recommendations and why you liked it. Also, please include any negatives such as hard beds, poor food, etc. Thank you all very much! We will really appreciate the information.

Hi,

While we haven't stayed "in" these towns, we have stayed very close to them.

Our favorite place anywhere is the Pension Mayringerlehen, in Ramsau, which is 10 minutes from Berchtesgaden. Negatives... you have to leave at some point.

Very nice place, good buffet breakfast which is served with home-made cheeses from their organic dairy farm, great views of the mountains, great location and the friendliest hosts we've come across (Sabine and Johann Grassl).

We loved our stay near Rothenburg ob der Tauber at the Landgasthof zum Rappen in Schonach, which is about a 10 minute drive from Rothenburg. Negatives... none we noticed.

Again, very nice place, our room was just perfect, nice hosts, great buffet breakfast in a quiet location. From our balcony the green fields seemed to stretch to the horizon.

Wow, I never posted photo's of the zum Rappen!

Hope this helps.

Your best bet might be to use Tripadvisor.com to list all the hotels in each town and then you can rate them based on the average ratings, individual comments, price location, etc., all from one website. The individual comments are usually quite extensive and cover the things you are looking for. Expedia.com has some of the same, but Tripadvisor is more extensive. Booking.com is my favourite for most of Europe. If you can't decide between a couple of places, come back here and set them up for a duel/battle for specific recommendations from us Fodorites..

Personally, I never even consider how the food is rated at the hotel I am staying at, except for the included breakfast. There are going to be so many other choices in each of those towns for eating that are literally a few minutes walk from where you will probably end up staying that spending time looking for associated restaurant comments and then possible weeding out a great room and location because of an average kitchen you don't "need" to use, seems counterproductive.

We liked the Burg Colmberg castle hotel east of Rothenburg o.d. Tauber. http://www.burg-colmberg.de/

Rothenburg: We have stayed in three places and found all nice:

Gasthof Greifen - perfect location, good breakfast, good atmosphere

Haus Karin - very nice landlady, good breakfast, outside the wall about 5 min walk

Hotel Raidel - modest breakfast, good location, little quirky

Regensburg:

Hotel Weidenhof, small room, large bathroom, good breakfast, excellent location

We will traveling to these two cities ourselves this year. Great stops.

Thank you all so much for your comments. When I mentioned that I wanted a place with good food I should have clarified that I was talking about Breakfast. I'm Too busy today to check out all the information but will soon.

We highly recommend Hotel Bavaria in Berchtesgaden. The breakfast was great and the restaurant in general is fantastic. It's close to the train station, and the accomodations were clean and pleasant.

A note to Paul: I checked out your photos on worldisround.com and they are gorgeous! You must be a professional photographer. When I have more time, I want to see all your photos you have posted. You have already made me want to see Austria.

Another vote for Hotel Bavaria in Berchtesgaden. Every morning I ate too much breakfast. I already have reservations for June. Be aware that the hotel charges one night's price at the time of reservation.

Check out this website. Many postings from travelers on places that they have stayed. Great Info for Bavaria.

I stayed in the Hotel Orphee in Regensburg...it's been about 12 years but it was a charming hotel in a great location.
