Recommendations for hotels in Helsinki

Lonely Planet says that hotels in Helsinki are expensive, and a little research has shown me that this is true. I usually pay $100 to $150. I want a pleasant, comfortable room with a bathroom.

Can you recommend a good room in this price range, or should I plan to pay more?

Hiya Peg:
we fell into a great promotional rate at the elegant old (1920's) Torni Hotel in City Center, walk everywhere. It's part of the SOKOS Chain now. We were treated royally. I do not have any pix ..but here is Helsinki and Southern Finland from our visit. (below)

I can agree with the Torni Hotel

It is a block off the main street in Helsinki which is Mannerheimintie.

Street is named after Filed Marshall Mannerheimintie and a statue of him on a horse, along his street and about 3-4 blocks away.

if you do stay at the Torni Hotel...go up to the Top floor for lunch/drink and sit OUTSIDE on the open balcony.

The Lounge is called Aljee Lounge

From here you can see 90% of all the places you will want to see in Helsinki.

From here you are 4 blocks away from the Market Square, Helsinki's focal point.

You can also walk to the Rock Church.

I've just booked some frequent flyer tickets and we will be in Helsinki in July, so it's great to see someone asking about it on the board. While I don;t have any recommendations yet I had a look at Booking.com yesterday and there seemed to be a lot of nice place between $100-$150.

I did get a reservation for what seems to be a very nice hotel in Helsinki. I had been trying to book a room on a website called Gala Hotels. Very cheap--$389 for 3 nights. I accidentally lost the website partway through the process and couldn't find it again, so I went with the same hotel--Hotel Helka--for 511 euros on Expedia.

Then I got an email from Gala this morning asking if I wanted to continue my reservation, so I did just that. I certainly hope this isn't some kind of a scam, as it's so much cheaper.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have only been to Helsinki on one occasion, and that was at the beginning of August last year during a visit to Finland, so we only have experience of just one hotel there.
We stayed at the Radisson Blu Seaside Hotel (not to be confused with the Radisson Blu Royal or Plaza Hotels).
The present rate is about $125 (US) per night for two people including an excellent buffet breakfast.
The hotel is right by the waterfront near one of the harbours. The number 9 tram starts outside the hotel for the 1 km ride into the centre of the city, and another tram route is only 100 metres from the hotel, and goes all the way across the city.
We chose this hotel because we were attending the World Dog Show which was being held in Helsinki, and we had one of our Border Terriers with us. The hotel was very welcoming to dogs.
Our room was very comfortable and spacious, and the staff were extremely helpful. As mentioned, the buffet breakfast was excellent. However, the Viola Restaurant for other meals is expensive and the food is unremarkable. There are several excellent restaurants within walking distance, and one only has to catch the tram to the city centre and harbour to find some really exceptional restaurants.
Our one criticism was that the bedrooms were not air-conditioned, though the restaurant and reception areas were. (This is contrary to what Booking.Com states, unless changes have been made since last year). I asked the staff about this, and they said that very few hotels in Finland are air conditioned, as the climate doesn’t warrant it. It never gets hot enough! We had found this true, staying in a hotel in Kuopio in the Finnish Lake District. Unfortunately, Helsinki was in the middle of a heat wave whilst we were there with temperatures of 27 degrees.

All in all, I would recommend this hotel.

Over the years I have stayed in a few hotels in Helsinki.
1. I have stayed twice in Academica which is actually a student hostel used for visitors during the holidays. The location is central but it's student hostel standard.I seem to remember that a curatin had come down which meant that the midnight sun woke my children on one visit. The last time I was there the lift had broken and we were on the 5th floor! The reason I visited twice was that the price was lower than everything else. The breakfast is good and they stored our luggage whilst we went to |Tallina for a few days.

2.I stayed at the Sokos Hotel at the side of the railway station in 2006. This was comfortable, convenient but dated. Great for leaving luggage if you're then catching a train or the airport bus. Good breakfast but they start clearing it away before the end so don't be late!

3. On another occasion we stayed at the Sokos in Vantaa as we arrived late and were flying out to Riga the next morning . This was a really good deal and a four star hotel but not convenient for the city.

4.Last visit (2013) we stayed at the Scandic Paasi at 99 euros a night. This was good but about 20 minutes walk to the centre. However it was a nice walk and the tram also ran along the same route. Good breakfast and quiet.
