Recommendations for a Drive through Chianti
 

Part of my trip next year to Italy will include a day driving through Chianti from Florence en route to our place outside of San Gimignano. We want to stop in a few towns and sites along the way and are looking for suggestions. We are interested in history, small towns, food, and wine.

We are hoping to get to our hotel around 3:00 to check in, relax for about an hour, before heading to San Gimignano for evening exploring and dinner (about a 10 minute drive from our place).

The drive looks like it will take about 2 and a half hours max, and we will be on the road no later than 10:30, which leaves us about 2 hours of exploring time, and part of this will be for lunch. What about two of the following towns? Maybe lunch and a quick stroll in one of the larger ones (Greve or Panzano) and some quick exploring in one or two of the small ones (Radda, Castellini, or Montefioralle)?

If you are on the road at 10:30, lunch in Italy is at 1pm and takes at least 90 minutes. So then you need to be eating someplace that is a 30 minute drive from San Gimignano.

However, I would also point out that San Gimignano is a very small place, and dinner does not start until 8pm in Italy. So if you want to rest for an hour in between arriving and touring San Gimignano, you can arrive as late as 4.30 and still have plenty of time to see everything in San Gimignano before sitting down to dinner.

I think the overall drive would take a minimum of 2.5 hours. If you're using Google Maps estimates, they are almost always too optimistic. Also, the towns have limited traffic zones (ZTL) that generally encompass the historical centers. You can't drive into the zones, so you'll spend time looking for parking outside of them and then walking into and out of the towns.

Everyone will have an opinion on the different towns. I think Greve is a bit big for a 'quick' stop to explore, although it will probably offer the most lunch choices. On our only visit to Panzano, the historical center was dead quiet, but it's a visually charming place. We enjoyed Radda and Castellina very much, with a slight edge to Castellina. We loved exploring the tiny roads in Chianti, but I don't think you'll have time to detour off your route.

Thank you both for the great advice! We would probably be ok with getting to San Gimignano around 5-5:30, we are going in June, so that would give us a couple hours of daylight/dusk to explore then have dinner in San G. That would mean getting to the hotel at 4ish.

So hitting the road at 10:30 (conservative) and allowing for 3 hours of driving time (conservative) would allow for 2 and a half hours to have lunch and explore somewhere. Maybe we can base one on the best place to have lunch, and the other on the best place to explore?

We are quick moving but we enjoy taking our time in a town like San Gimignano.

Stayed 3 nights and did outreach to other towns.

So, you decide if you want to quickly just see everything and then have dinner, or just lounge and enjoy.

Having been there twice, the last time my SIL and I raced to the top of one of the towers--much fun.

Panzano is a small town but with an upper and lower section, good restaurants.
Castellina is larger, also has good restaurants.

I think we have decided on a brief stop in greve, then stops in montefioralle and castellina. Thoughts?

Greve is Ok and is where we went to shop for groceries and at a great fresh pasta store. There is a large statue of the Chianti Black Rooster in Greve.
Panzano is more charming as is Castellina. I have stayed in Castellina three times and Panzano once. Radda in Chianti is also worth a look.

Thanks! We were only going to swing through greve for a quick stroll around the main square before heading to montefioralle. I am thinking that montefioralle seems more interesting than radda, but happy to hear opinions from those that have been to both! Then we will head to castellina
