Also re: convent lodging

They do exist, I remembered that I had this bookmarked. Around or more than the same price of the Port Royal, usually. Not for me because of the curfews, but perhaps you’re religious and that’s the appeal.

And I forgot the link sorry

Thankyou again and to Palenq and marvellousmouse for tips. All appreciated.
I have travelled extensively but this time on a lesser budget but i know it is possible if resourceful.
Airbnb studios in Paris are appealing especially after my long haul flight from Australia.

I really like the look of port royal, bvlenci. Looks like a great neighborhood! And it’s not much more expensive than the generator’s dorms! Would you happen to remember how much they charge for the tokens, and how long one token gives you in the shower? Do they charge for towels too?

Marvelous_mouse, my husband and I got a room with toilet and shower, so we never used the tokens. I found this hotel in the French budget guidebook Le Routard (the Italian version). In that guide book they had information about the tokens. We certainly had towels in our room, and I'm sure all rooms did.

This hotel is not a hostel. It feels like a hotel, with a lobby and a reception desk. The double room with bath is inexpensive, but the single room with shared bath is very inexpensive. My main issue with our room was a lack of electrical outlets. If I go there again, I'll bring an extension cord and a multiple plug. The room was comfortable and clean, but on the small size.

The neighborhood was very nice, on a tree-lined boulevard. It's a residential neighborhood, with few hotels and lots of neighborhood shops. I believe the closest metro station is Les Gobelins, a short walk from the hotel.

And Paris-Est Camping has bungalows and chalets to rent - not really useful for OP but for others who have kids and are driving a great option for easy access - shuttle to RER station - about 30 minutes into Paris from camp. Lots of kids play areas and other kids as camps are family-oriented -kind of like moving into the neighborhood.

Christine - you are wrong, as usual.
There are several religious convents open to women. I just cited one of them.

If you do not see the 13-digit registration number on AirBnB's website, it is an illegal apartment.
AirBnB is supposed to "wipe the calendar" after the 90 days of the property owner's vacation time is up. Just so you know.

fuzzbucket Dec 8th, 2017 11:56 PM

And AirBnB's apartments are normally over 100 - to 125 EU per night.

"And AirBnB's apartments are normally over 100 - to 125 EU per night."

What's "normally"? That's like saying I book moderately priced accommodations, meaningless and utter nonsense besides. Last visit I booked a studio in Montmartre for US$45 a night +fees, $400 for a week, all in. Loved it, in my old neighborhood. And there are loads of them, or was. We'll see now.

Thanks, bvlenci. Adding to my list!

I would just caution you to be careful about apartments since you are not coming to Paris until May 2018. The municipality is becoming ferocious about the obligation of registering rental properties, and the situation will probably be more extreme the moment 2018 begins.

Just as an example, the city demanded that Airbnb remove 40,000 listings yesterday because they did not have official registration numbers.

MmePerdu Dec 13th, 2017 07:23 AM

Even if every listing was eventually removed from the website, if someone had booked the apartment they'd have received the phone number of the owner and could continue the arrangement outside the site. Not a good idea, but possible. The down side, of course, is that they'd have already paid Airbnb. However, I've found the company very good about refunds and if the property was no longer available officially a refund would be in order and the reservation might be negotiated privately. Again, not a good idea, but certainly possible, just like in the olde days when we wired money, never knowing for sure until we got there if the offer was legit (Oh, right, that's why we who do, like Airbnb).

I've not been to Paris for a couple of years, but the last few times I went I stayed here...

http://www.cosmos-hotel-paris.com/en,1,6436.html

I see the prices have increased to 67 euros per room per night.

Good location on a street with plenty of restaurants (Jean Pierre Timbaud) and the 92 bus goes right by the door - and on through the Marais past the Louvre and on to Montparnasse. Lots of other bus routes have stops nearby as well, you can find it all out on the ratp.fr website.

justineparis Dec 14th, 2017 10:11 AM

Coco most apartments won't let you checknintill 3/4 , many hotels have allowed me to check in much earlier and all of them have allowed me to at least dump luggage !!

Hi! I just visted Paris and stayed in "Au Royal Mad" booked it from Gard du Nord Train Station literally 30 min before we arrived Oct 10th. It's around the corner from the Voltair Metro stop. I was with my partner and only got charged Euro 42.00. Super cheap for paris. As rates are usually per person a single would be 21.00 I would think. Tons of single guys and gals all ages where in the place...Washrooms/showers are in the hall..Hotel is old but then isn't all of Europe. It was a clean rm, with a sink, fridge and super comfy clean bed. one of the best I slept on during my trip. I would definitely stay there again as it's only a place to sleep. And I would stay there as a single woman. I am 62. Good luck!

indianabanana Dec 14th, 2017 11:21 AM

I also discovered that most rooms thru Italy and France were Euro 40.00 minimum for a single person. I travelled for 2 weeks alone and did not find anything cheaper. hostels were about Euro 30-35.00 per night in a 6-8 bed dorm room. This was mid-sept to mid oct travels.
