Recommendations Between Paris and Milan

In April we will be spending two weeks in Paris then heading via train to Milan to spend time in Northern Italy. Are there any must-see villages between the two - specifically in France - that we should stop and explore for 1-3 days? We have two children, ages 10 and 6, and love exploring lively areas.

The direct Paris-Milan trains start at just 29 euros (46 euros in 1st class), there are 3 direct trains a day, book at www.capitainetrain.com.

They go via Lyon-St-Exupery (Lyon's airport station), Chambery and Turin.

I love Turin, well worth a stop and one of Italy's most under-rated cities even if you're not a fan of the 1969 Michael Caine film "The Italian Job".

I haven't been to Lyon for years, but it's a great short break city, take a train from Paris to Lyon Part Dieu in the centre, stay a day or two, then take a tram to the airport to pick up the TGV train to Milan at Lyon St Exupery.

You can of course route yourself via Switzerland.

And indeed, you could go via the absolute ultimate Alpine train ride, the narrow-gauge panoramic Bernina Express. This takes far longer, but boy, we're talking an unforgettable world class journey here...

You'd take a TGV Paris-Zurich at 200mph in 4h05, stay overnight, then take an early train to Chur, Bernina Express to Tirano, then the two-hourly local train to Milan's magnificent Centrale station. Details at www.seat61.com/BerninaExpress.htm

Might be better staying in Chur rather than Zurich, come to think of it, a nice small Swiss town.
