Recommendation for Budapest Guidebook?!
 

I'm looking for a guidebook focusing solely on Budapest. I know that Fodor's, Frommers, Lonely Planet, etc. all offer these guidebooks, but I was wondering if anyone had any special preferences. I already have accommodations, so I don't need any information about that. Just places to go, eat, etc. Anyone have any suggestions on their guidebook preference and why it is your favorite? Thanks in advance!

I bought the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide Budapest for my upcoming trip. It is wonderful!!! I ordered it from Overstock.com (they usually have free shipping). It has all the top places to go and has a map showing these points of interest. I don't have it with me today but I beleive it's over 250 pages.
When are you going to Budapest?

Just bought the Visible Cities guide to Budapest - they're new to the market - they seem to be a bit more current / up to date - a bit more geared to a younger audience. (They also do a beautfiul Dubrovnik guide.)

I'll be headed in Budapest for just four days, May 28 - 31st. Haven't made any plans as what to see or do yet, but thought it would be good to have a guidebook when the time comes!

Both of the guidebooks mentioned sound great, though the visible cities might just be a little better for me, as I am on a budget. I'm not sure which one to get yet, but I'll probably decide within a few days.

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Quick question: Does the visible cities budapest guide have maps for getting around?

We relied on 'The Rough Guide to Budapest', which was a pocket sized book for ~$12us, and it was excellant. It had great descriptions of the sights, routes to get there, metro & city maps, etc.

Budapest's Time Out is very good for restaurants, bars, etc (the things Time Out does).

there are numerous maps in the VCG to Budapest. There are 5 suggested walking tours with maps - and 3 overall maps of Budapest in the back - kinda like the DK maps.

My only quibble is some of the type on the maps in the back is a bit hard to read - but that could just be my eyes and age. And there isn't a street guide/finder as in DK's.

I bought the visible cities book a few days ago from Barnes & Noble. We'll see if it comes in handy! Thanks for all of your input. Leaving for Europe in 6 days! =)

I've just returned this past Saturday from a fantastic week in Budapest. Weather, activities, sightseeing - everything really great.

Like you, I tried searching and researching for things to doa nd places to see an eat and drink at before I left; I found a lot, but in all truth, all I ever need were these 3 publicatons that I picked up at the airport while waiting for the minibus (a great service, by the way). They are :

1. a copy of 'Where' Magazine,
2. a copy of the Budapest Sun, and
3. a copy of the small glossy mini-mag "In the City" or "Budapest City Lights"

All are available either free or for a few forints, and will probably be available at your hotel as they were at mine, the Gellert.

In these publications, you will finds recommendations, reviews, maps, walking tours and up to the minute information on music, theatre and other Arts events happening in the city that I wasn't able to find anywhere on line.

I had a blast.
