Recommend a self-guided tour of historical London? (a how-to website, book, etc. needed)
 

Hi All,
I love touring around historical areas. In the past I've found various websites and books for various cities that show some great walks that you can take on your own, exploring the history and architecture at your leisure.

Can anyone recommend a website etc. that show how to do self-guided walks of London?

Appreciate your help.

there are MANY "walking London" books. many of them focus on the historical perspective/sites.

Go into any large books store (Borders, Barnes & Noble, or a large local one) and you should find at least 5 or 6 different ones to choose from. Look through them and decide whaich is closer to your style.

Some I own or have used include "Slow Walks in London", The Perfect London Walk" (this one is by Roger Ebert and the entire book is about one walk mainly through Highgate and Hampstead), "London Walks", "Walking London", "On Foot Guides London Walks" and several others.

If you are interrested in Jack the Ripper at all I suggest "Walking Haunted London" by Richard Foster Jones. Very nice walk going by all the crime scenes discussing possible suspects. The book is great, it adresses a lot of the city's history in addition to haunted spots. Great stories (and walk) in the Tower of London.

i usually collect these at the start of my research. however by the time i am set to go i usually know so much i can easily make my own itinary and suggest ones for others too.
