Recommend a book about Italian foods by region?
I'm looking for a book that is not so much a restaurant guide as a guide to what sorts of foods are traditionally eaten in the different parts of Italy. Any suggestions?

There are many good cookbooks about individual regions. If you want a regional cookbook with chapters about each region, and the recipes organized by region, off-hand the one I can think of is Italian Regional Cooking by Ada Boni. It is out of print, so you can usually get it very cheap on Ebay. There are other regional cookbooks by section of the country, for exampkle, they might be about southern cooking and cover maybe seven regions, or about the norther and cover several northern regions.

Fred Plotkin's "Italy For the Gourmet Traveler" is what you are looking for. Don't be misled by the word "gourmet." It is exactly what you described, with detailed explanations of what foods and wine are particular to a region, plus restaurant recommendations for many towns in Italy.

There are a number of books written more or less from the practical "food for travellers" point of view, and I agree that Plotkin may be just what you want.
But if you want a couple of books by food writers that focus a bit more on the food from a sort of culinary historian point of view, you could try Waverley Root's "The Food of Italy" (out of print, but try libraries or used book dealers) or Claudia Roden's "The Food of Italy: Region by Region" which is in print and has both narrative and recipes.

Touring Club of Italy's "The Italian Food Guide: The Ultimate Guide to the Regional Foods of Italy".
In addition to information about regional foods, it ncludes restaurants, cafes, pastry and other specialty food shops, wine shops. Also hotels and agriturismi.
There must be a new edition out, because I bought my copy (2002) as a remaindered book.
