Recently returned - a hotel report on Hotel Maximilian, Prague
Hi all:
I’ve been using this board since 1999 to plan trips to Europe and have gotten tons of good information. My husband puts our travel journals on our website and our latest trip will be posted oin a few weeks, but I wanted to give input on several of the hotels we stayed at because I know how helpful that information can be.
Maximilian Hotel Prague
This hotel is in a great location in Prague - about a 5-minute walk to Old Town Square. They’ve recently renovated the hotel and it is designed in the Minimalist style. I mention this because this style is not for everyone - very trendy and somewhat stark with the use of contemporary bright furniture. The reception looks like desks in an office building. However, it is very well done and the rooms are extremely comfortable - the biggest bed we had in Europe, robes, slippers, large bathroom - overall very tasteful. And the breakfast buffet was definately the best (and highest-quality) we had in Europe - something for everyone, from fruits, yogurt, cereal to meats, cheeses, pesto, tapenade, fantastic breads, eggs, pastry - I’m hungry just thinking about it. I’d definately recommend this hotel (unless you absolutely hate contemporary design). Shower water pressure good, but on the first morning there, the water temperature was warm at best and the room had a safe.

hi, Carol. It's good for you to be posting reviews for others. I've stayed at the Maximilian twice, it is one of my most favorite hotels in Europe.
I just wondered from your description as it sounds surprising given when I was just there a couple years ago. Do you mean all of the rooms are in minimalist style now? Or just the common areas? The lobby area is rather contemporary, as I recall, but the rooms I've been in (and I've been in three and seen a couple more) were not minimalist, they were basically Louis Philippe style furniture, I'd say (not everything as some things were built-in, but the bed). I think a chair and table were not exactly Louis Philippe but were not very modern minimalist, either. It wasn't stark or bright, though.
That's just what I wondered about the style because this hotel is not very old to begin with, and just opened within the last eight years (I think I was first there in 2000 and it was fairly new) when it was totally renovated from the townhouse building, and newly furnished. I am just very surprised that they would have refurnished all the rooms when it wasn't that old to begin with and in excellent condition. It's owned by an Austrian hotel group, I believe. The breakfast buffet was always very good.
HOpe you had a good time in Prague.

Hi Christina:
I think the Maximilian has changed since you were last there. I believe this renovation is new within the last three months.
Our bedroom was what I'd call modern contemporary - definately no Louis Philippe furniture! Parsons table, mid-century, minimalist style chairs - but VERY, VERY comfortable - big bed with heavy duvet and granite bathroom. This is a very nice hotel.
Unfortunately their website (that they also recently updated) doesn't really show the rooms very well.
And yes, we loved Prague!

huh, well I wonder what got into them to redecorate a hotel like that when it wasn't that old, that must have been expensive. Maybe they changed owners and the old ones carted off the furniture or something. Now I know minimalist hotels are the latest rage in Europe, but it was so nice before. Definitely no Parsons tables and minimalist chairs when I was there.
well just viewed the website and they mention the redesign by some London architect last winter. They do have the same owners, but the little I can see of the rooms -- they really are different. The chairs don't look nearly as comfortable as they were before and the whole room is not as pleasant or warm (to me -- I can appreciate that design but prefer the other for a bedroom). It makes you wonder how hoteliers decide these kind of things -- they were very popular, and didn't need to do that to get business, as far as I know.

It's funny because when I booked the Maximilian it looked like an entirely different hotel - and very nice also!
Like Elaine said, if it ain't broke . . .
