Julie,

We've stayed in Lison three times in the last two years. (All late November trips). In fact, we actually stayed in two different hotels on the same trip--one at the beginning and the other at the end of our itinerary.

They were (in order of preference):

Avenida Palace ---magnificent, old-world elegance and attention to detail. The lobby, public spaces and dining room decor are fit for royalty.
Rooms were done in ornate, period furnishings. Check out the web site. It is as lovely in person as it appears on the web. Location couldn't be better. At the foot of Avenida Liberdade (The amazing breakfast-dining room has gorgeous views across the Restorades and strait up the leafy Avenida.) You are 1/2 block from the tourist office, same distance to the funicular up to the Barrio Alto, and around the corner from the busy Rossio and its suburban train station. It's a one-minute walk to the Restorades subway stop. If it is in your price range--it is a good bet.

Lisboa Plaza--3/4 of the way up the Avenida and in an area that is much more reserved. (There are tons of hotels on both sides of the Avenida.) We found the Lisboa Plaza's publice areas to be very impressive, but our room was dreary and ordinary---all the $$ were spent in an all marble, amenitied bath---which was freezing cold each morning at that time of year. Breakfast buffet was impressive. Hotel is on a tiny street just off the Avenida. Loud noises late at night from the numerous clubs in the area. If this is your pick, get a room facing the back of the hotel. Metro stop was 1/2 block away.

Hotel Metropole---Great location right on the Rossio--a beehive of activity day and night. Gorgeous views of the Castle San Jorge from the front-facing balconied rooms. Room decor was period and the rooms were very large. Bathrooms were tiny and very old-fashioned. Lobby area was very dark and dreary and the breakfast buffet so small, they should have all it "continental.

Since you stayed at the York House before, I would imagine Avenida Palace would be more in sync with your tastes.

We love Portugal!!
