Recent Chartres Hotel Experience

I am looking at spending 2 nights either in or near Chartres on our return from Mont St Michel this fall. Doing a search on Le Grand Monarque results in post of several years old. Has anyone had recent experience staying here or anywhere in Chartres or nearby?

We will have 2 days between Mont St. Michel prior to returning to Paris. This may not be enough to travel down into the Loire Valley (we will be driving). My thought was to get to the Chartres area and base out of here and explore the area/relax. Any hotel suggestions near Chartres are encouraged.

Thanks

We stayed at a chambre d' hote near Houdan about halfway between Chartres and Giverney. It was 10 km from Dreux. The view of the cathedral dominating the skyline arriving from the north was a magical sight. Other places to see: Maintenon, Rambouillet and you could also drive to Versailles. We booked through www.stopoverconnections.com. They have an interactive map.

We stayed at the Le Grand Monarque in Chartres and found it a very good hotel. There is a restaurant in the hotel that had good food. The staff was very helpful. The manager even volunteered to drive us to the train station. I think you would be pleased with the hotel. The cathedral is within walking distance which we liked.

Maryanne,

Thank you for the update. Did you use this hotel as an overnight to visit just Chartres or as a base to visit other areas of the Loire?

Thanks.

I've also stayed in the Grand Monarque, although it was a couple of years ago. I found it to be very nice, and as someone else said, you can walk to the cathedral. My stopover was strictly a one-night stand to see the town and the cathedral, and the Grand Monarque was perfect for my purpose. Good Luck.
