Reasonable Lodging in Venice
 

We are leaving on a cruise ship out of Venice on a Sat. but arriving on Fri. I have been on several hotel websites and have found that hotels especially in the historic area are awfully expensive. Does anyone know of a reasonable priced hotel that is in a good location? A friend mentioned the Oltre Il Giardino which looks wonderful but pricey. Thanks

If the cruise is anytime soon (or within the next 4 months or so), the main problem you will face is that anything reasonably priced and good is probably booked up, particularly for a Friday night. So suggestions won't help much.

You might want to check out the B&B Gli Angeli (www.gliangeli.net). We are staying in Sept. We based our selectin on reviews on venere.com and comments on this board. It might work well as it is in Arsenale (where I think the cruise ships dock) and is also close to St. Marks.

I am not at all certain about this, but I think the cruise ship dock is at the other end of Venice from Arsenale. Isn't it to the west of the train station?

I have had some clients taking cruises to/from Venice and that is what I recall.

You can find some decently priced hotels near the train station. For one night, it won't be central, but you'll have the fun of riding the vaporetto down to P San Marco. The station is called Santa Maria Fiore, if that will help in your search.

Do try venere.com, and cross reference what you find with a search here and on tripadvisor.com.

I'm confused - the train station in Venice is called Santa Lucia. Santa Maria Fiore is the name of the Duomo in Florence (possibly some other station, but not in Venice).

When we were in Venice at the end of last Oct, an RCCL cruise ship docked right by the Naval Museum! Great location for the ship passengers, but looked weird from shore to see a huge & I mean huge ship sitting there!

Another thought. The way I find a hotel is:
1. Venere.com; bring up Venice list. Scale it down into area I want. Pick one that looks like the price & description I want.

2. Have a tripadvisor.com window on my screen also. Input the hotel name into trip advisor. If the rating is below 3.5, I go to the next one. If not, & review looks good, I try to find the hotel's website & review it (often the hotel name with .it or .com. Check on availability & price. Make notes & keep going or book.

I've always booked directly with the hotel. But others on here have said that Venere.com is good.

Of course, I come here to see if anyone has personal knowledge of my selection(s). Fodorites know it all!

Please check to see if B&B Gli Angeli is available. We stayed there in June and Sonia (owner) was so help and just delightful. Very convenient to get around but not right at St. Mark's Square so much quieter etc.

Thanks to all you posters. I will check out all of the suggestions. We aren't going until next April but several hotels I have checked out said they already had no rooms available. Maybe it's because it's not 2008 yet, but we really like to get everything planned so we don't have to think about those kinds of thing and can focus on excursions, tours etc. Thanks again. If anyone has any other suggestions please keep they coming.

The Acca Hotel is reasonably priced in pricey Venice (Venice is worth the extra money!). Don't let the 1-star scare, it's a great place. www.accahotel.com

No mistake, tusc. The ships dock in both locations.

I checked out the Acca Hotel website. The rooms look great to me. Maybe someone can tell me about this area and how far it is from attractions. The price certainly looks good.
