Really bummed and a trifle panicked about flights to Europe

Julie,
I think you'll have much better odds of finding cheaper transatlantic fare if you avoid travelling in the peak summer months. The best fares/sales I've seen are usually in winter months (Jan-Mar), late autumn (Nov-first 2 wks of Dec) or before summer (May-June).
Also Paris is a VERY popular destinationfor Americans. Try less popular destinations. I believe NW flies to London and Frankfurt and KLM to AMS. Once you're in Europe, it is relatively easy to move around, either using discount airliners or trains.
NW also has extensive network to Asia (lots of mileage)... Have you given thoughts on this?

But remember the flip-side. Very popular destinations = many, many more flights. It is this abundant supply that makes Paris one of the CHEAPEST destinations to fly into. Ditto for London, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam. It will be exceedingly rare that you will find a flight into any other European airport that will beat the prices into London, Paris, Amsterdam, or Frankfurt.

Hi Julie,
I too live in Ft. Lauderdale, from November to June, and agree with you about the hurricane season not being fun. However, instead of shuttling back and forth to Europe, why not rent a place and stay for the summer season? You avoid the unpleasant travel and expense of the flights and it is oh, so nice! I live in Rome when I'm not in FL, and even the heat doesn't bother me because I've got a cool place, and since you're not touring, you can just slow down those hours. Take life easy like the Europeans, enjoy.

I am sure to be missing something because it sounds kinda of DA for a RETIRED person to plan SIX (!) trips to Europe.....Just to maintain Platinum Status?...WOW!!! talk about Global Warming! Why not just stay there longer periods at a time?!!!
Well, overall flights to Europe will be cut 30-40% in the upcoming year, a measure aim to prevent cutting fares. So, rather than brainstorming how to fit your budget around airline proces, recalibrate and think about spending more time ABROAD.....
