We found Cochem to be very busy and it was a Sunday when we ere there. But I never thought of it as "trashy" in any sense of the word.
But I must disagree with Paul just a little in that I found Bernkastel to be much prettier than Cochem. Maybe there were just too many people in Cochem blocking the view!

I guess its not trashy but on the trashy side. My example would be it's like Blackpool but that may not help any American friends>
wow Cochem and Blackpool - i would never have dreamt that anyone would compare these two VERY different type places. There is no correlation - Blackpool IMO is one of the tackiest places in all of Europe (i've been there several times and i LOVE Blackpool but it defines tackiness and pedestrian.
There is absolutely no comparison between Blackpool and Cochem IMO - not in the weirdest stretch of one's imagination!

on the other hand it is pretty central for boat trips so worth knowing it where it is.
I rceeckon their are loads of nicer towns and villages on the Mosel. I seriosly like Trier, Traub and Trabak (spelling well off) is so nice, Bernkastel is lovely.
But Cochem is tourist town IMO

Sounds like blackpool to me>
sounds like you have neither ever been to Cochem or Blackppol to make such totally daft IMO and IME comparisons. You gotta be kidding, right?
Polar opposites for sure.

I hope this is not to late to be of use to you...we spent 3 nights in Cochem this July. I can't recommend a hotel because the one we stayed in was a nightmare (it was the Alte Thorschencke) but that's another story. However, we loved the town of Cochem. If we stay there again we would stay in a hotel across the river from the main part of town, it's quieter over there. And the Da Vinci restaurant there was pretty good.

We just returned from Beilstein - the Hotel Lipman. I have to agree with everyone else; it's a lovely little hotel, absolutely charming. Great service, lovely breakfast and good value at dinner. Our triple room worked really well for my husband and myself with our teenaged daughter. Her part of the room was quite separate from ours, which she loved. My only caveat about the hotel is not really about the hotel at all; the town itself is charming but tiny and it won't keep you busy, so you need to have a car and be prepared to do some exploring in the valley. I would definitely recommend the hotel!
