Re:weather in Alsace, France region
 

Hey! I leave May 22 for two weeks in Alsace. I have been keeping a watch on the weather there and it seems to be pretty chilly and rainy. I know from prior experience that these weather postings are sometimes not very accurate, so would love some input from someone there. Thanks so much!

It is a mix of everything currently. I'm on the German side but the border to France/Alsace is hardly 15 kms away. We are in the middle of that chilly period called the "Icy Saints" that is absolutely normal around early/mid May and happens in most years. It is usually the last period with frosty nights in spring, much feared by farmers and gardeners. This should be over quite soon, though. Towards next weekend temperatures are expected to rise.

Concerning rain, the rule for these parts of the world is very easy: never travel without rain jacket and/or umbrella, no matter what time of the year...

I have been to europe more than 90 times - and except for southern Spain and a few two day turnaruonds it has rained at least once every time.

Unlike the US - major part of which are a desert (as in much of the west, including CA) europe is a temperte climate with a normal amount of rainfall. And anywhere north of the Alps is rarely hot except in midsummer. (If you look at a globe and see how far europe is - this will make more sense.)

So bring a sturdy folding umbrella, waterproofed walking shoes and a very lightweight rain jacket. Then enjoy the weather - which IMHO is much better for touring than 90 and humid.

Thank you all for your replies. nytraveler, I too, have been to Europe many times; maybe I have been very lucky been it only rained when I went to Holland and Ireland.
