Best Place for New Years Eve in Europe

Hi.

I have appreciated everyone's advice for our trips to Europe in the past couple of years. We usually book a family vacation Dec. 26th - Jan 3 with our college aged kids but this year-- They are Staying Home!! We are going alone! So, knowing that we love off season Europe, which city, would YOU love to be that time of year? And why?

In my mind only place to be is at a New Years Eve Ball in Vienna. Costly but I'm planning one day.

We had a great time in Paris over New Year's 04-05. But of course, I can't imagine not enjoying Paris whenever you go.

I would choose Heidelburg, Germany at the castle overlooking the river. The park at the castle is packed with friendly people and fireworks are legal for new years in Germany. So not only do you see the official show local nationals buy and blow-off their own little show. Not much violence that I saw or hear about and the police are there just to make sure. The greatest time then we wandered down to all the little pubs after the celibration and partied with all sorts of different people.

Absolutely Edinburgh - Hogmanay IS New Years.

Actually the other cities mentioned so far would be good too - but honestly, New Years in Edinburgh is REALLY special

I've visited just one place for New Year's Eve so far and that's Paris. It was fantastic.

Except for Hogmanay in Edinburgh i think Europe's biggest New Year's Even party may well be in Amsterdam - though there is no single blockbuster show like in some other cities the whole town rocks for the whole week between Christmas and New Years - the Amsterdam tourist office says this week is the busiest week of the year in Amsterdam as folks flock in from all over Europe and hotels must be reserved months in advance. Of course amsterdam has other party accoutrements that make partying for some types more exciting.
Moi i'd definitely go either to Edinburgh - where the one night is an amazing citywide fest or to Amsterdam for a week's festivities.
