Ravello or Taormina/Sicily?

Hi,

We are planning to go to Italy next spring.
After Rome, which would be more relaxing, memorable or more beautiful- Ravello or Sicily- perhaps Taormina?

If Sicily, which is best for water views and R&R?

Having been to both, you can't go wrong with either choice.

We are not R&R travelers as we are always on the go. A beach community like Tamorina in Sicily or an island off the coast might suit you as well.

You don't give many specifics about how much time you have, what else you want to do, etc. etc. On a practical note, it is further, make that a lot further, to Taormina from Rome than Ravello. So much so that there are flights from Rome to Catania ,the closest airport to Taormina.

Ravello is a bit out of the way as well, but not nearly so much. You can take a train to Salerno, and from there drive or bus to Amalfi (about 90 min from Salerno) and from there another bus (only about 20 mins) to Ravello. Or you could go via Sorrento, although that means changing trains in Naples.

If you are having trouble deciding, I'd pick Sorrento as a base from which to commute to see places like Ravello, Positano, Capri, and even Naples. Sorrento is small enough to be relaxing, but not so small that you can't easily commute elsewhere to find things to do.

I'd choose Ravello. It's much easier to get to (see previous post). Taormina is full of tourists off cruise ships and the narrow streets are packed. The beach is nothing special, pebbly and not very clean. Both places are overpriced.

Thank you all. We are going for just 12 days to Italy including 2 for travel. We will spend 4 1/2 in Rome and then to Ravello or Taormina. He has never been to Italy. I have been a few times.

Sorrento is nice- have been there, but not quite what we are looking for. If Taormina is packed with people off the cruise ships- it also is not for us.

Last time to Ravello and back I did just as a previous post said- via Sorrento/Naples and via Salerno. For this trip, I think Salerno is easier.

Hubby is not as big on sightseeing as I am. He wants to end with a view on the water and a book!

Thank you all.
