Rapalo-Pisa-San Gimiano

Hi-

I am wondering whether it is possible to take a late morning train from Rapalo to Pisa, see the Tower and then take another train from Pisa to San Gimiano, eat dinner in San Gimiano and then take a train to Florence, where I am spending the night.

I know it is possible to make the trip without San Gimiano, but I was hoping we could spend a nice evening there and it doesn't seem to fit into my travel plans any other way.

Thanks.

So, does anyone have an answer? It would make my trip work much smoother if I could see Pisa and San Gimiano (by train) in the same day (and then end up in Florence that night). Thanks.

You can check the schedules yourself at trenitalia.com. I input a Saturday in May since schedules for September are not available. Be sure to use the correct spellings of the cities.

Rapallo > Pisa Centrale
Hourly departures. Some are direct trains that take 1 hr 34 mins; some are connecting trains and take as much as an hour more.

Pisa Centrale > San Gimignano (Poggibonsi)
Every half hour. All trains connect at Empoli and take 1 hr 20 mins.

Poggibonsi S G >Firenze SMN
Hourly departures. All direct trains, takes 1 hr 4 mins.

Yes, it's possible to do this. It's your choice whether it will make for a pleasant day.

Is there a train station in San Gimiano?

Hi Greene - The problem is it will have to be an early dinner in S.G.

Last bus leaves S.G at 20.35 (- not Sundays) via Poggibonsi to Florence.

Or ... you could taxi to Poggibonsi soon after 21.00 and catch the last train from Poggibonsi at 21.46.

Hope this helps ...

San Gimiano is spelled San Gimignano. It has no train station but is quite close to Poggibonsi. As Steve mentions, you take a bus from the train in Poggibonsi to San Gimignano--or a taxi.

Greene: I was certain you meant San Gimignano (or San Jimmy, or San Gimi for a short version)..be aware that Poggibonsi is a fairly substantial 8-9 mile taxi ride from San Jimmy. There is a bus, I imagine. Sounds like a tough day to me.

You could rent a car in Rappalo and make it whole lot easier and do-able...drop off in Florence (at airport so you won't have to drive into town). It's easy scenic driving, which I did from La Spezia a few years ago.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Sorry about my spelling of San Gimignano--it's almost as bad as my pronunciation of the town!

It looks like the trip (via train and bus) will be too much (especially while we are carrying out bags. Hopefully, we can move things around and see San Gimignano after our Florence visit.
