I have started a new thread as I am trying to book a hotel in Rapallo for a very last minute vacation for the 23 year old daughter and myself. We will leave on the 15th of June and spend a week touring around Genoa,Cinque Terre,etc.hopefully returning home out of Pisa.Using only trains and /or sightseeing boats.
Share your best parts of Rapallo-sights,eateries,"things"that were terrific to see or do.

The princess and I love to eat,see history,enjoy the sea,shop,etc.Looking for things that are not an arm and a leg to do or see as this is a budget minded trip.Thanks for any tips or suggestions.

Our family stopped in Rapallo for two nights on our way to Rome after having been in France. It was a lovely town, can't remember the hotel though...we went to the Tourist Office when we arrived in town and they helped us book a lovely little hotel with views to the sea. I don't remember anything particularly outstanding other than their passagiata is lively, food market colorful, good restaurants abound. Sorry I have no specifics but I know you will enjoy your stay there.

Try Albergo Bandoni. Don't know if they have a website. We stayed there several years ago in a room with a view of the sea. Pleasant people, good breakfasts and walkable from the train station. Phone 0815 50423.

We never made it to Rapallo on our trip last month, but this was what I had in my notes:

The Castle overlooking the sea, built by the Genoese in 1550 is definitely worth a visit, so too are the churches of San Gervasio and San Protasio. Renowned for its lace, Rapallo has opened the Museum of Lace with over 1400 pieces of rare and precious antique lacework on display. From Rapallo, we recommend a trip to the Montallegro Sanctuary, an important place of prayer. The sanctuary stands 600 metres above the sea and provides a magnificent view of the Gulf and can be reached by cable car or on foot (1 hour hike). http://www.santuarionsmontallegro.com/

I stayed in the Hotel Bonadies and was very happy.

It was not expensive and Ravello is very small.

I loved Ravello and if I aquire lots of money I will buy a house there.

I loved walking around the town (you need to be able walking as it is it and down stone steps) and walking anound the 2 gardens (sorry I don't remember the names but as I said it is a small town so you can't miss them).

My favorite was a Classical Music Concert in one of the gardens - it was brillent and well worth a visit.

I might not be able to fly into Milan to get to Rapallo-has anyone ever done the train thing from Rome up to Cinque Terre and how did it go for you? Thanks!

A couple of years ago when I was on a cooking tour we stayed at the Hotel Astoria in Rapallo. It was very nice,clean,excellent breakfast,our room faced the sea and the people on the desk were very friendly.
We had lunch at Vesuvio in Rapallo.
Had a dinner at Ristorante Rosa in Camogli with a beautiful view of the village where we saw tuna boats come into the harbor.We also had a cooking class at Giancu in the hills around Rapallo. Chef Fausto Oneto is quite a character. Beautiful location and delicious food.
We took the train from Milan which took about 2 hours.

My wife, daughter and I just did the train from Rome to Rapallo the first week of May. It worked out well. We went 1st class which I highly recommend. It doesn't cost much more but was well worth it to have a reserved seat. My daughter booked it at the Train station in Rome, but it can be booked online at Trenitalia with no problems. It took about 4 1/2 or 5 hours for the ride.

I was a little apprehensive about doing trains instead of just renting a car, but my daughter convinced me otherwise. She was correct, but make sure you don't have a lot of luggage because the overhead storage is somewhat limited.

If you have any specific questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

We actually stayed in Santa Margerita and had a great time. I'm sure you will too.

Thank you for telling me of the train services-we are still trying to decide whether we will fly into Milan or Pisa possibly Rome so appreciate your experiences.

I just passed Rapallo on a train from Pisa to Milan. Flying into Pisa would make for a fairly easy journey into the Ligurian coast. Also, the Pisa airport and Pisa Centrale station are about a 5-minute train ride from one another, whereas getting from Milan's central train station the airport isn't quite as quick or simple. Good luck!

Ekscrunchy-just want you to know that my daughter and I had planned on going to eat at U Giancu but the folks at the Hotel Astoria in Rapallo told me that it would be about a 35 euro cab ride there along with a pricey menu. It about 5km out of town but they said that the cabs really will charge you which I found true when they told me it would be 13 euros for a 8 minute trip to our hotel from the train station.

Many thanks, DutyFree. We will probably have a car for part of the time we are on that coast, so will consider dining there if we can arrive by car. I don't blame you for not taking that taxi! In fact, with those rates, we just may decide to pick up our car earlier during our stay. (Will then drive to Lake Como..)
