This appears to be one year later than you originally envisioned, but happy for you that this trip is still happening. Rapallo is convenient to so many places of interest. And, Trieste is also a wonderful, largely undiscovered part of Italy. Miramare Castle, just outside the city, was worth the visit. When there, we did take the opportunity to do a one-day bus trip to nearby Ljubljana, Slovenia, a perfect spot for an inexpensive lunch on the river.

Thanks for the Trieste recommendation. We have a free day there.

As I recall the Ljubljana bus, which was modern and comfortable, cost only $5 or $10 round trip, was frequent and took maybe 90 minutes, with some nice scenery along the way. It did leave from a hard to find but large garage very close to the main train station.
