Rants: What I Dislike Most About This Forum ...

... Are posts like this one. <BR> <BR>No, seriously, what I hate the most are the know-it-all snakes ... Always shouting "COME ON, PEOPLE," "GET WITH IT, PEOPLE" and other phrases all in caps with the word "people" in them ... commonly calling people "stupid" or "crazy"... <BR> <BR>And as much as I appreciate all the suggestions as to how I can simplify my travel wardrobe, I have had difficulty finding any black, permanent press fig leaves. <BR> <BR>(Eve, if you read this, please call home. I miss you. Adam.)

I dislike when people request "THE BEST" instead of something like "YOUR FAVORITE" or "SUGGESTIONS FOR". Example: "What is the best place to eat in Vienna?" I'd prefer to see "What is your favorite place to eat in Vienna?" <BR>

My dislike - I am new to this forum and don't always understand the buzz words. Example - troll. Could someone please enlighten me? Also - calling people stupid etc. I think most of us are here to learn something and or to share. Thanks

Rex Feb 28th, 2001 08:56 AM

"Troll" is not a buzz word unique to this forum, and it has been explained here on several occasxions before. But there is no harm on providing some explanation again. <BR> <BR>A troll is a presumptive "diagnosis" given to someone who posts a question that sounds too silly or stupid to be serious - - and is often intended to "stir up" controversial replies about the customs of Europeans or American tourists. <BR> <BR>Example: Do I need to get translations of all my "I'm with stupid ---&gt;" t-shirts that I intend to wear on my trip to 6 countries in 7 days? <BR> <BR>And a follow-up to Adam: is this really a common problem? Can you cite an example? With well over 1000 posts a week here, I cannot think when I have seen 1 post in a 1000 here that reads like that! <BR> <BR>

Tirol Feb 28th, 2001 09:08 AM

For a good "troll" example, see Michelle #1 and Michelle #2 posts of <BR>"HELP, CANNOT REMEMBER HOTEL NAME". <BR>The question is, which one am I and did the REAL Michelle ever return to the post? <BR>HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Sheila Feb 28th, 2001 09:25 AM

The rudeness. Essentially what adam said. I also don't like the fact that often people don't take the time to recognise humour in others (and I don't just mean me). <BR> <BR>I hate the posts about what to wear; or the ubiquitous.."I'm going to Paris. What should I see". But I don't have to read them and others choose to so live and let live; that's what I say

Tirol Feb 28th, 2001 09:45 AM

Rex always panting after Juliette whatever!

Rex Feb 28th, 2001 09:51 AM

Oh, sweetie, I was just doing that to make you jealous! <BR> <BR>I just love how it makes your eyes sparkle when you are peeved at me.... <BR>

Joe Feb 28th, 2001 09:57 AM

Sheila: "But I don't have to read them and if others choose to do so, live and let live, that's what I say". <BR> <BR>Amen I say. Amen!

This isn't a severe dislike, and it is only indicative the popularity of the forum, is that with so many posts, often a response I want to get back to gets buried by a multitude of new posts by the time I get my son off the internet for MY turn at night! I have to page through "the next 50 messages" multiple times. (And sometimes I haven't remembered enough to know what to "search" on to try to find it...but then that's what I dislike most about getting older...memory loss....)

zzz Feb 28th, 2001 02:07 PM

ummm... learning systems? <BR>

ttt Feb 28th, 2001 02:58 PM

Thank you zzz ... what a great name! <BR> <BR> <BR>It was my understanding that this board was not to be used for posting adds .... and WHAT HO!.... another one has appeared and I will resist responding as it will only push it to the top (which I learnt from a nnote from Uncle REX). (Also, I do business in all the counties listed and, I have NEVER, but NEVER, met ANYONE that does not speak English! If you are going to learn a language that you might actually USE when travelling then learn 10 important phrases in French, Italian, Spanish). <BR> <BR>I would like to feel comfortable using my own, personal I.D., or perhaps establish a "personality" but resist doing so, at this point, because I have a strong resistance against being eviscerated in public …. <BR> <BR>Public flogging of "newbies" by the more senior members hardly encourages new devotees. <BR> <BR>I wish more "locals" (i.e. Europeans") would contribute and we could figure out how to encourage them to do so in any language they can. <BR>

When pompous posters pontificate!

Travelman Feb 28th, 2001 05:26 PM

#1 J Vicek #2 Elvira #3 Rex #4 St.cirq?

ttt Feb 28th, 2001 06:25 PM

Travelman: <BR> <BR>Interesting Post. I wonder why you would mention these people? <BR> <BR>I have not read anything from the first, but I think the other three try to help others and I, certainly, have learned from them. <BR> <BR>Not been on the board for very long, and perhaps you have seen more than I, but I think REX, in particular, tries to mediate arguments, Elvira and St. Cirque provide very valuable information on France. <BR> <BR>I am quite sure none of the above need, or would accept, anyone to argue their corner, so .... <BR> <BR> <BR>Not been on the board for very lone, but I think REX, in particular, trys to mediate arguements

Elvira is a pompous self important bore. StCirque is fascinating. Rex I haven't followed and it sounds as if I'm missing out on someting.

Nastiness, personal attacks, picking at intellectual/psychological/cultural "scabs", repetitive overly broad unresearched questions, one-upsmanship.

Joanna Feb 28th, 2001 07:57 PM

As above, personal attacks, time-wasting trolls (but do like the amusing ones), posts directed to one person when that person has given their e-mail address and could be contacted directly - it's as if nobody else is welcome to respond : maybe that's not the intent but it feels like it is IMHO.

When you get to the bottom you go back to the top again...

Groundhog Mar 11th, 2001 07:33 PM

Sometimes it seems like the same thing over and over and over again and I can't get away from it, but I keep coming back and I love it just the same.
