Rain Rain, Go Away
 

I probably should I realized this sooner, but I was looking over the extended forcast for my trip (I'm gone from the 26th until the 3rd) and I realized it's supposed to rain most of the time. I'll be in Engelberg Switzerland, Paris, and London. Any tips for how to stay warm or dry? (aside from the obvious)

layers. Start with a layer of silk "ski" underwear, available from Magellan or Wintersilks.com or other sources. Over that, turtleneck or tee shirt, then a sweater. Under slacks, pantyhose make a surprisingly warming layer, but wear socks with your walking shoes. It is helpful if the walking shoes/boots are waterproof.
Bring extra dry socks in any case.
Umbrella, a coat that will keep you warm and dry, and of course, just like your mother told you, a hat.

Keep your schedule flexible, keeping in mind what is open or closed each day, so that if it's pouring you can decide that's the day for a museum or theatre, rather than a lot of outdoor strolling.

Cold weather=lots of excuses for pastry and coffee stops.

Katelynn, we've had several trips where the long range weather forecast was dismal but the weather was beautiful! Hopefully, you'll just have to worry about keeping warm and not dry as well. Have a wonderful trip.

Tou've got forecasts for rain in Engelberg?

I can't find any. Every forecast I can find says it'll be doing what it always does there. If it's not snowing, it'll be crisp, well below freezing and bright.

And if you don't know how to dress for snow in a ski resort, what are you doing going to Engelberg in the first place?

If I'm looking at the wrong forecast, then get yourself up to the restaurant at 3200m, (where there's absolutely zero chance of warm weather)

This shouldn't surprise you as you are traveling during wintertime....it could be worse and be snow! My friends will be in London during the same time frame and are bringing layers to wear, starting with silk longjohns (worn under pants and even skirts with boots). They took my recommendation and bought their pairs from Eddie Bauer (also online). Bring along several pairs of socks, and a wool coat with fleece lining will keep you extra warm. Often times the lining can be removed, in case the weather warms up a tad.

Ahhh...snow is so much better.

Our trick is to intersperse the walking and sightseeing with drinking. Your choice; hot coffee, wine, grappa whatever floats your boat. It works well! Also, we do more museums and art galleries all of which are much more pleasant after a glass of vino! ;)
