Rail travel from Edinburgh to London
We will be in Ireland and Scotland soon and have the whole trip set up. We travel by train from Edinburgh to London and have reservations at the Holiday Inn Gatwick. We fly out of Gatwick the next day.
Does anyone know how to make the connection from the Edinburgh/London train to this hotel??

Not terribly much help, but the GNER train from Edinburgh will leave you at Kings Cross. The Gatwick Express train leaves from Victoria. Suggest either the tube if you don't have much luggage or a taxi. We're doing the same thing next month. Note that you can get a much lower ticket if you commit to a specific date and time leaving Edinburgh and don't want to stop along the way.

Thanks to both of your for the reply. Can you explain what you mean by "commit"? When must we do that?
Do you mean I must but a ticket before I go or a couple days before I need to use it? We will be in Edinburgh for 5 days before we want to ride thr train to London. We surely don't want to stop along the way either. I understand it takes about 4 hours to get to London. Is that what you think? Thanks

You should try to book ahead, so as to get a seat reservation and get a cheap ticket.

Single (one way) fares are never as good value as returns (round trip), so with that in mind, you could book a really cheap return with a fictitious return date.

www.thetrainline.com is the place for information and booking. You can also phone them.

Look first of all for single fares and then for returns. You might get a good value single, but I doubt it.

Get them to post the tickets to your hotel, but keep the print out. Or you can collect them at the station in Edinburgh.

If you get a cheap return, it could be as little as £40. Standard is good. First class is better.

F Y I, Virgin and G N E R do that route. Until the end of August, there are very good value fares on Virgin, including first class. www.virgin.com and click on train.

If you do get a booked ahead ticket, stick to the times and dates otherwise you will be fined.

The advice in the last post is great. whatever you do don't wait till you get to Edinburgh, to buy your ticket.

7 or 14 day advance purchase tickets , from anywhere to anywhere, can be purchased at just about any train station in UK, it only takes a few minutes and you have your tickets in hand.

we made the mistake once of not getting the tickets in advance and it cost about 180 pounds more than it would have if we had just purchased them when we got to England.
