Rail tickets Salzburg-Munich

Will I be able to buy round trip rail tickets in Salzburg, or will I have to buy each way in each country? Thanks,
Lisa

It is no problem to buy round trip rail tickets from Salzburg or any train station for that matter. Travel time between Salzburg and Munich is only about 2 hours as I recall.

I did this twice last year and it is easily done.

No problem buying both tickets in either Germany or Austria. Because Salzburg is practically on the border, the German Rail (Deutsche Bahn) also operates an office in the Salzburg train station, if I recall correctly.

There are 2 types of trains running this line: faster (1.5 hours) and slower (2 hrs). With the slower trains, you can travel on the Bayern Ticket (m-f) or the Schöneswochend Ticket (s-s), which allows up to 5 people to travel on the same ticket--a good option if there are 2 or more of you.

You will not have to buy a ticket for a particular departure. You just buy a ticket for the route, and then take any train that qualifies for the ticket you purchased. Trains run approx hourly on this route
