Rail ticket question - Austria
I need to travel by train from Lienz, Austria to Venice on May 29. I haven't been able to purchase or even find ticket prices on either the Austrian, German, or Italian websites. I need an afternoon departure, and would like the fastest route (via Villach). Do these need to be purchased ahead, since it is for a specific date and time? Or purchase there? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

In another post, I was ira (I think) who said that journeys which include legs on domestic and international trains to Italy have this problem that the tickets cannot be printed online.
But when you proceed with the booking procedure, you can either get the price quote and tickets by phone or ask for a quote/tickets by e-mail.

If you are uncomfortable with this you can also check prices and print online tickets when you split up your journey in two legs: Lienz-Villach, Villach-Venice. The combined price is €49.
Maybe you will get a better price when you ask for a quote for the whole trip by e-mail.

The afternoon EuroCity to Venice (which you will take from Villach) is labeled "reservations compulsary", so I would need to get reservations for that leg.
The train from Lienz to Villach (transfer at Spittal) is a regional train for the first leg (for which reservations are usually not necessary/possible), and a EuroCity for the short leg from Spittal to Villach.

Hi m,

It is usally very difficult to buy international tickets, especially to/from Italy, online.

I tried both Austrian and Italian websites and Railsaver. No luck. offers 2cl tickets on the 15:04 for $88.

>Do these need to be purchased ahead, since it is for a specific date and time?

No, but $88 (56E) looks pretty good.

Hi C,

Thanks for your 2nd post. I was worried that my identity had been stolen. :)
