Rail Snooze Trivia Q?

What is the only part of the EU's main international rail corridors that is not owned by the state (national) railway of that country? As for main we mean major long-distance routes for both freights and passenger trains - a major major rail link.

flanneruk Oct 26th, 2006 07:47 AM

Presumably the high-speed bit of the London-Folkestone line.

Though I'm not sure I'd call it a "major long distance route for freight"

audere_est_facere Oct 26th, 2006 07:49 AM

The channel tunnel is privately owned too.

PalenqueBob Oct 26th, 2006 07:50 AM

well flanneruk you may be right but no i wouldn't consider that part of the EU's long-distance freight services either. Technically perhaps but this one i should say in on the Continent.

GeoffHamer Oct 26th, 2006 07:50 AM

I thought this was a forum for travellers, rather than railway enthusiasts. I assume the answer is the high-speed line in the UK to the Channel tunnel, but the traveller does not need to know who owns the railway line the train is travelling on.

a est f - yes and you're right too but i've reformulated the question to say on the Continent, a major north-south line.

PalenqueBob Oct 26th, 2006 07:53 AM

Geoff is right - i withdraw the question and posting.

GeoffHamer Oct 26th, 2006 08:00 AM

Well, why not tell us the answer? If it's not the Channel tunnel line, it must be a route through Switzerland where there are many railway companies.

How about Lichtenstein which has no national railroad that I know of but "allows" trains to pass through between Swizerland and Austria?

Does that qualify as an "international rail corridor? ("international" being defined as involving at least two different countries)

Or does it have to involve only members of the EU?

In fact, I'm not sure that country even has a rairoad station!

Taking a guess - is it the Bernina Express?

PalenqueBob Oct 26th, 2006 12:23 PM

No nearly no freight travels over that route nor do long-distance passenger trains.

No to Leichtenstein as i think it's railway is actually a part of the Swiss SBB system or Austrian OBB.

It's the BLS railway between Iselle, Italy and Bern - a main freight and passenger corridor that is (or was) the only part of Europe's major freight and passenger corridors running on a 'private' train line - 'private' in the sense that the SBB doesn't run it but not really private as i believe the canton or some public entity operates it.

Dukey Oct 26th, 2006 12:38 PM

Well, Bob I still think my answer qualifies because that corridor is not owned by the state of Lichtenstein as you have graciously affirmed; it is on a major long distance route and both freight and passneger trains use it.

It is about as "major" as any other link IMO unless you'd rather walk to Austria from Switzerland.

Now you know why I was so successful on "Jeopardy" LOL!

dukey - the judges will have to rule and i'll get back.
