Hi Fodorites
I will be flying out from CDG on Friday April 25th and need to be there at 11am for checkin. My last few days in France will be in Brittany so I didn't want to go back to Paris for the last night if I didn't have to. Does anyone know of a town/city with a reliable rail connection to the airport that will get me there in the morning?

There is a direct TGV leaving Nantes at 6:04 and arriving at CDG at 9:14.

Arriving at CDG less than 2 hr before check in is cutting it close.

You could breeze through security, or be held up for hours.

If you do take the train, let your airline know you are there as soon as you arrive at CDG.

you are saying that train or transport strikes in France are rare

how many have their been during the last year - how many days parts of most of the reseau affected

anyone planning on training into CDG or Orly the same day should IMO not as though these things may perhaps be rarer then i think it will happen the one day when it's most important to you

and trains can be late

recently when going from Austerlitz to Les Aubrais trains, all were interupted by an electric feed problem and there were some hours when there were no trains. Trains en route no doubt would be sitting on the tracks

That's the adivce i have - get to your departure city or airport the night before and relax - that's what my ignorance has taught me.

I have gone to stations throughout the years only to be met by greve or strike signs

usually these stikes are previewed days ahead of time but not always in case of widlcat strike i mentioned in Alsace above.

If going to airport from Provence be sure to inquire at stations about looming greves

Unfortunately the strike situation in France - not only trains but taxis, public workers, metro, etc may only exacerbate if Sarkozy holds fast - unlikely in the history of government cave ins to union demands

Yes, train strikes are quite rare. The strikes at the end of last year were compared to the strikes that took place in.... 1995.

I would say that 12 years between major strikes is not all that bad.

We would go back to Paris. Our rule of thumb is: <b>always spend the last night in the city you intend to fly out of</b> so that you have alternate means of getting from your hotel to the airport.

I do agree unlikely so i grant you that. I did not know that there had not been on in a dozen years previously and the striked i described in Strasbourg that affected trains to paris was like five years ago - it was an uannounced regional strike but nevertheless - i guess what you call a strike may make a difference

French rail strikes don't figure heavily into my opinion, but I just cannot be comfortable with trying to get to an airport from a faraway city on the day of travel. If something goes wrong, you don't have many options. If you're in the same city, you can usually improvise.
