Things to look out for when traveling the Rail from Rome to venice

yes....I never been on a rail and can't speak another language

Is it hard to find your way around in the station?

Well, buy tickets online in advance if you want to get the best prices, from the www.trenitalia.com site. There are lots of posts on this website about how best to use the site.

Italian rail stations aren't hard to navigate. They all have big boards with all the trains listed and all the tracks listed. You just need to get yourself to the right track before the train leaves. It's pretty intuitive.

Snickles - train travel in Italy is easy. After a couple of trips, you'll be a pro... and you will wonder, "Why ride an airplane!"

ok so I booked my tickets on rail Europe to go from Rome to Venice. I do not see seat assignments....is it first come? Also do I need to do to the ticket window with my tickets or am I good to go? I also read that you validate your tickets before heading up to the rail. Am I correct to say that? How early do I need to arrive? Thanks for your help. It may seem easy to you but I just don't need things to go wrong. Also about safety. I heard you need to watch you suitcases carefully on the train....is that true?

If you haven't purchased tickets yet, buy them from Trenitalia (the Italian train company), not RailEurope (a reseller). Tickets purchased from Trenitalia will include your seats except for slow R trains which you don't want to buy in advance anyway.

If you are beginning your journey in Rome - the validation is very confusing --when we tried to ask no one would answer us -
the Rail Europe validation line is on the outer area of the station - long lines - and you need your passport -
Plan on 30-45 mins for this.
We found the train very comfortable - our only problem was lifting the luggage up onto the train - 4 ladies traveling with no many bags. lol
Have a wonderful trip - You will love Venice -- explore the back streets and restaurants off the main canal.

People on this thread are giving you answers to two different things. Some are thinking you bought a railpass and others think you bought point-to-point tickets. It's not clear and validation is not the same for both.

If you bought tickets (not a pass) for any of the fast trains )AV,ES,IC), they should have seats included. If you bought a rail pass, you will have to buy seat reservations as they are mandatory on fast trains. Tickets with seats do not have to be validated.

If you bought any tickets for slow R trains (included the train from the Rome airport into Rome), they don't have reserved seating and you must validate your ticket before boarding.

It is hard to change password after registration. Will NOT except a new password? Any Help???

I looked up the following MINI fares for my trip planning:

June 25th VENEZIA S. Lucia to Firenza S. Novella (2 people) 38euros.

June 28th Firenze S Novella to Roma Termini ( 2 people) 38euros.

July 1 Roma Termini to Napoli Central (2 people) 28 euros.

July 5th Salerno to Venezia (via Roma) (2 people) 78+38=116euros.

I am going on the Rail train from the Roma Termimi to Venezia S Lucia. I contacted them and I do have seats reservation. So if I understand I do not need to validate. Once I get to the terminal would I go right to the track or is there somewhere you check in? How much time before hand do I need to be there

You go straight to the track ("binari" or "bin" in Italian), find your carriage ("carozza" in Italian), and climb on. There is no check-in. The train will leave on time, and you should arrive at the station about 20 minutes before your train leaves. Your ticket will show the train number that you are booked on, and the departures board will show the train number, destination (Venice SL), and the platform number (bin).

They will come around and check your ticket while you are on the train. You may want to buy some snack/drinks to take with you. There are a couple of grocery stores in Termini as well as fast food. Snack and dining cars on the train.

There are big boards in Termini tell you which binario (they can and do change if a train is delayed, etc.) at the head of the tracks. You also need to know what car your are in (it should be on your ticket). Trains can be quite long and it can be a trek to your car. You don't want to get on the wrong car as you would have to maneuver through everyone else trying to board and store luggage. The long distance fast trains are usually in the stations about 15 minutes.
