RAF Museum --- worth a visit?

My husband and I will be visiting London in October and we're thinking about visiting the RAF Museumn in Hendon. My husband is an aviation fanatic --- he's been to most of the usual US aviation sites and he's wondering if it's worth a visit? I visited their website to get location, hours, etc. Anyone ever actually visited the museum? Should we go? Any suggestions? Thank You!

Yes, do give it a visit. My wife, Julie and I went and we both enjoyed it very much. The Battle of Britain planes were most impressive. Its an ealy tube ride to Colindale and then a shortish walk.

I, too, took the subway out to Colindale a number of years ago and enjoyed the museum a great deal. Back then they were re-habbing a Halifax four-engine bomber that had crashed during the war into a Norwegian lake. The cold fresh water had preserved it magnificently. There is a larger and newer museum out by Cambridge, too.

The site referred to in the above post is at Duxford. If your husband is an aviation enthusiast for WW11 aircraft it is not to be missed. It is the largest WW11 aircraft restoration site in the world. It has at least one of each of the types of aircraft from the European theatre. Most are airworthy.I know of several people who had this site as their prime objective on their English holiday. Take the train from Kings Cross station to Cambridge and catch the shuttle across from the Station to the airfield at Duxford.Americans flew P-51 Mustang escort from here, it was also used for Spitfires and Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain. Do a search on British War Museum -Duxford. Plan on at least 4-6 hours.

Thank you for the great information! I showed the website for the British Air Museum to my husband and he was thrilled! Now he has to decide which museum to see! Contrary to my DH, I'm not spending my London vacation in several air museums looking at planes!

Thanks for the interesting thread! I am hoping to go to London next year (and France) and DH is also a huge aviation buff. I didn't even think of something like this- he would be in heaven. Marla-that's the only downside DH may never want to leave- LOL!

Why not visit the memorial to airmen on Cooper's Hill, Runnymede ( Near Windsor ) ? It's very nice & in a beautiful part of the country. Supposed to be one of the biggest memorials around ( no 'planes though ).
