Radio the same?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, lol....but, is radio transmission the same in the UK as it is in the US?? Will my US transistor radio work over there?

Thanks......

Not a stupid question (because US TVs, VCRs, DVDs and the like will NOT work), but radios, cassettes, CDs, and albums) are not a problem.

I believe there are some differences to make them work completely the same.

For AM, the US frequency range is 530KHz-1700KHz in 10KHZ increment. The UK seems to be 153KHz-1611kHz in 1KHz increment. It appears that you will not get lower frequency stations UK using US radio and also will have hard time getting stations not around 10KHz increment if you have a digital tuner. No issue if you have analog dial tuner.

For FM, both US and UK use 88MHz-107.9MHz, but US stations are in 0.2MHz increment 88.1, 88.3, 88.5, etc, while UK stations are in 0.1MHz increment 88.1, 88.2, 88.3, etc. So again if your tuner is digital unless you can change to 0.1MHz increment, you will have hard time getting all stations clearly.

Maureen,

....and, IMHO, the CONTENT and selection of radio broadcasts in the UK is pretty poor. Let's see what shall we listen to?...BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, something else, BBC1, BBC2, BBC3,BBC4...wait! Is that a station from France? Merci Dieu!

In southern England, northern France, Belgium, Luxemboiurg and Holland the AM wavelength of 648 metres gives you the BBC World Service, a distinguished station. On FM, around 93 is BBC Radio Four, for news, documentary, and entertainment, while around 91 is BBC Radio Three for classical music. There are also innumerable pop music stations. In Berlin you have selections of BBC World Service and BBC German service on FM.

Ben Haines, London
