Raclette and/or Fondue place in Paris?
 

We're staying at the Champs de Mars in the 7th next March with our 13 15 year olds. Looking for good restaurant that specializes in raclette and fondues. Preferably near the hotel, but we don't mind going to another neighbourhood. Any suggestions?

There is a wondeful place near Madeleine that we've been to twice called La Ferme de St. Hubert. One side is a cheese shop--one of the best in Paris. The other is their small and delightful restaurant. They feature raclette as a full meal, bringing the special heating appartus to the table so the cheese melts into a plate, you scrape it with the wooden spatula and slather it on the wonderful dried meats, boiled potatoes, and everything else in sight. It is wonderful -- a horrible thing to do in the middle of August when the temperatures are soaring, but we do it anyway. It is on Rue Vignon, which runs off Rue de Seze, right behind Madeleine. The restaurant is on the left going up the street just a block from de Seze. We did it for lunch and skipped dinner that night. We've done raclette in Switzerland, but it was never this good and this much fun. They also do fondue, but we can't get past the raclette.

True, that cheese shop/restaurant near Madeleine is great, it's rue Vignon. There is another restaurant that specializes in fondues and raclettes on rue Royale, between Madeleine and rue Saiint Honoree, between the wonderful Laduree tea room and Ralph Lauren. Try it!

I have been buying "raclette" cheese lately (having first tasted it in Switzerland) and showing it to my children and telling them that one day they will have the real raclette experience. We too, will be staying at Champ de Mars and you can bet we will take our kids to the restaurants mentioned above. Thanks!

My favorite tiny restaurant in Paris specializes in fondue and raclette: GR5, on rue Gustave Courbet, near Trocadero in the 16th. It's not too far from Champs de Mars: a nice walk or a short bus/metro/taxi ride. About 10 tables, one waitress, dirt cheap, delicious. A favorite neighborhood spot, not too well known to tourists, but Anglo-friendly anyway.
