Quick question-Amalfi area
 

We are considering a trip to the Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi area next April (2019). I’ve read that most businesses/hotels are only reliably open May-October. Will this impact a potential trip? We aren’t looking for a beach vacation at that point in the year, but like the idea of exploring the area outside of the peak summer season. Any thoughts would help us decide on this area or another in southern Italy.

It depends on when you're travelling. Easter next year is the 19th -22nd April and traditionally most businesses will be open for that weekend. However, you will certainly find places open earlier than that, as Easter is a bit later than the norm. Places on the AC will certainly be open at that time, unless you're travelling right at the beginning of April and the weather is awful.

We did a similiar trip in 2014, but in June/July. We stayed in Sant'Agnello, a 20 minute walk from downtown Sorrento and took day trips to Pompeii, Capri and Naples. We were there for 8 days. Next time I'd add Ischia and Procida. Two days were so hot that we stayed at our hotel and swam in the Med. BTW.....we LOVED https://www.hotelcorallosorrento.com/en/

If you are going late April, the weather should be fine, although nowadays, it's hard to predict any type of weather. And even if some of the main tourist spots are still closed, exploring more undiscovered towns is always an adventure.

On one trip to Florence, in October, it rained the entire week.....you just carry on!

If it were me, I'd go!

We were only on Amalfi Coast in late March some years back; all of shops/restaurants were open in the following destinations: Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello

I was also there in late March a couple years ago. There was plenty that was open. There were some shops and hotels that were not yet open for the season, they were 'fixing up' - painting, repairs, etc. So it didn't quite have the same feel as in July, but certainly plenty of places to stay and eat and of course the scenery is always "open". I had just been the previous July so I could tell that there were places that had been open with outside seating, etc. in July and in March they were closed but if I hadn't just been there I wouldn't have even noticed. And of course there was way less in terms of crowds so that was nice.
